Ags lead the all-time series with the Torreros 4-1. Last meeting: Ags won 31-3 on September 17, 2011. If I remember correctly, our lone loss was at San Diego was an awful, uninspired loss that drove DrMike absolutely crazy!

First meeting ever with San Diego State.
  • Causeway Cup
    They had to tweak something to try and keep it a rivalry! :-}

It's interesting that the actual physical paper edition headline on the sports page differed from the online edition headline. I was taken aback a little when I saw the full headline in the paper edition: "UCD runs up score pounding Sac State in Causeway Cup" since term "run it up" usually carries an unsportsmanlike connotation with it. However, nothing in the article indicates that that was the intent of the headline.

The online edition was as PA stated above: "UC Davis women pound Sac State 110-78 in Causeway Cup." It looks like an editor saw the paper headline and changed it for the online edition.

The headline in the paper edition was a poor choice of words especially for people who don't read past the headlines and, consequently, were left believing that the Aggies were poor sports and poured it on the poor Hornets. Oh well, maybe it will add a little fuel to the rivalry and that's a good thing.

By the Way, if the Ags can continue to play as well as they did in this game, we are in for a heck of a ride!
  • Causeway Cup
I think we actually lead 35-5 after the 5 points we get for the WBB win according to the totals shown in links posted by PA above.

Some more interesting stats from the game: It was the most points scored by the Ags in the D1 era surpassing 102 against San Jose State in 2010 and the second highest point total since 1998 when they rang up 117 at Metro State.

The Hornets were averaging 97 ppg coming into the game. As usual, they shot the ball at will but were only 27 of 84 overall for 32% and struggled from downtown putting up an amazing 42 attempts but hitting only 12 for 28%. Live by the sword, die by the sword...

The Hornets coach, Bunky Harkleroad, had this to say about the Aggies: "They played at a much higher level today and they have a very good basketball team. They hit shots, they play poised, and they are very well coached. I was proud that (our players) didn't quit. In our style of play we don't mind giving up open mid-range jumpers, but that's what they are great at."

Other than the disappointing loss to Hofstra, the Aggies have only lost to Stanford and Oregon State both PAC-12 powers. When this team gets in a flow they can be very good and they have only one senior on the team so the future looks bright.

I hope Aggie fans will give this team the support they deserve once they return from the road and begin league play in January.

The Aggies blow out the Hornets 110-78. The Ags had 7 players in double figures lead by Morgan Bertsch with 18. All 11 of the Aggies who played got into the scoring column. For the game we shot 61% overall, 45% from 3 and 93% from the line while winning the boards by 15 rebounds 51-36.

It was total domination by the Aggies who played smart and handled the Hornets' trapping full court defense very well for most of the game. We actually exploited their pressure in the first half to build a big 26 point lead but got sloppy at times with the ball in the second half and ended up with 21 TO's for the game. TO's were the only area of the game that the Aggies did not do well in.

The Aggies made a statement today about who is the best college women's basketball team in the greater Sacramento area now that they have annihilated the Hornets and beaten Pacific.

    Nice job Aggies!

The Aggies played a tremendous 1st half of basketball and lead the Hornets 56-30 at the break. The Ags exploited the Hornets' pressure defense over and over again and shot 64% overall and 50% from 3. Marly Anderson led the Aggies with 12 and Morgan Bertsch had 10.

What a heartbreaking loss for EWU. I have never seen a catch like that TD catch the YSU TE made with 1 second left. He reached around the defender who was facing him an pinned the ball with his right hand against the defenders back who had in in a bear hug at that point and managed to maintain control as they both went down. Unbelievable!

I did not like the call that EWU's coach made to squib the kickoff after the Eagles went up 38-35 with under 5 to go. The ball took a big hop but didn't go far and YSU set up shop near mid field. That decision may have cost them the game since int all came down the last play from 2 yard line. The Eagles defense had worn down and the short field really helped YSU win the game.

I really liked our defense and our ball movement. We had 20 assist on 29 FG's which is a great assist to FG ratio. It was also nice to see everyone get significant minutes. I like it that Coach Les was continually changing the lineup so everyone could get playing time with different player combos. It shows me he cares more about his players than he cares about the point spread.

Back on the road next week at Air Force.

47-30 Ags at the half. Excellent defense and a lot of players getting PT. William Jessop a good 3 point shooting team.

I'm excited about the hires that Hawkins has made so far. These are high quality, very experienced coaches that he has history with so they'll work well together. I love the Zen, wisdom, and philosophy stuff that is important to Hawkins and it seems that these coaches buy into those values and I think it will play well with our scholarly athletes.

Speckman has overcome his disability and has been successful both a player and a coach. His story is inspirational and his bio says that he has been a sought after motivational speaker for big name corporations and organizations. He wrote a book about "figuring it out and getting it done." I like what he brings to the coaching staff.

My mom got her master's degree while working full time and raising 3 kids as a single mom. Whenever I would be whining about something she always used to tell me, "Quit complaining and do something about it!" It used to drive me nuts as a kid but it was one of the most valuable lessons she ever taught me. It's nice to know that Hawk and Speckman are like that too. I think they're going to "figure it out and get it done."

I would think as Assistant HC he will have a significant amount of influence about using or incorporating the fly offense no matter who ends up being the OC.

I do remember Hawkins saying in his presser that he was all about being creative and using deception to make it difficult to know where the ball is. So it makes me think he will definitely use elements of the fly in his offensive scheme of things.

    So what happened?

When I left to go to a Christmas get-together the Ags were up by 9 points with 5 minutes or so to go. We were playing well and keeping a 5-11 point lead in the second half.
If I'm reading the live stats right, it looks like the Aggies went 1 for 10 down the stretch while the Bison were 5 of 6.

    Ouch...this one hurts...let it get away...dang!

Did anyone hear Coach Les' post-game comments?
  • MBB: Aggies @ North Dakota State
Excellent half of defense by the Aggies. Both teams struggled on offense for much of the first half before the Ags opened up a 9 point lead 29-20. SDSU closed within 1 before the Ags ended the half with a spurt to go up by 7.

The Aggies shot 50% overall and 50% from 3 while winning the boards 19-12. Chima has 10 and JT and White have 7 each. Nice to see JT getting into a better offensive flow and White drove the ball hard to the basket for a couple of 3 point plays.

Garrison Goode is on the bench but doesn't have a boot on so hopefully we'll see him back for league at least.
  • MBB: Aggies @ North Dakota State
Ags take a 35-28 lead into the break in a defensive minded ball game by both teams.
