• Week 3: Dixie State at UC Davis
Thanks Obda! I hope I can hear the crowd all the way to SF!

My wife and I have had the same disappointing experiences when we've gone to Dodgers/Giants games and we always seem to lose and be surrounded by obnoxious Dodger fans to boot! We'll be seeing the Padres and the Braves on this trip.

We're over the moon with how the Giants have been doing this year! They've been fun to watch especially since it's been such a total team effort with so many players contributing and who ever thought that we'd be leading MLB in HR's?!! Gabe Kapler has done a masterful job of managing this team with all the injuries we had and all the players going back and forth from the River Cats.

It's tough being in the same division as the Dodgers though. We could possibly win 100 or more games and not win the division and then have to play in the Wild Card game. I'm just hoping we win the division and send the Dodgers to the WC game! Man, I'd love to see that happen!

I hope I'm not the only 'Old-Timer" here. I always seem to be the most senior person in anything I do anymore. Can't complain though, still got my health and fitness but not my six pack!
  • FCS Polls Week 1
I think #12 is a fair ranking for us at this stage.

They generally have a pretty good following of Big Sky fans. Mostly the Montanas and EWU though. Even though most of the commentary on their forum is about the big teams in the Midwest, East and the South, they are a pretty knowledgeable group. We get a lot of respect from NDSU fans too.

We need to win solidly at SD and then against Dixie State. That will set the stage for the game at Weber which will be huge assuming that Weber is still highly ranked by then also. At that point, if we beat Weber in their house, you'll see us jump up the polls.

How many more votes did we get under our alias, Cal-Davis?

Thanks! I can't believe I'm 3/4 of the way to 100! We'll take in a couple of Giants game while we're in the City. We're big fans and they're a huge surprise this season. Best record in baseball but it never comes easy. Hope my heart can survive the "torture!"

It doesn't appear that the FCS fans over on anygivenday.com were that impressed with the Aggies win over Tulsa. They ranked us #12. Click on the images below to enlarge:

  • Biggest Aggie upsets
I was at many of those great Aggie upsets that have been mentioned.

For me, I think the Stanford game was the most shocking Aggie upset though. I mean, D2 Davis beating FBS Stanford. That's crazy! It really was Davis vs Goliath!

I'd put our win over Nevada-Reno as the second biggest upset. Nobody gave us a chance. Reno was unbeaten and #1 in the nation coming off a 77-0 thrashing of Sac State if I remember correctly. The Toom was packed with SRO 5-10 deep around the field. The place was electric and the stream engine was smoking, wheezing and whistling like crazy.

We were so undersized compared to the Wolfpack players that it was ridiculous yet we took control of the game and never looked back. I remember the Reno players walking around like they didn't know what had hit them. This was Sochor's signature win, IMO.

Of course, those were the D2 glory days and it's a whole era now. The Tulsa win gave us a glimpse of where Hawk is taking this program. I think he has his sights firmly set on eventually bringing a FCS National Championship to Davis. Exciting times for Aggie fans!

Oh yeah, I totally forgot that Tulsa had 9 players suspended for the game. So they weren't at 100% full strength.

Regardless, the Aggie defense bent but didn't break and came up with the big play when they needed it and the offense kept grinding and did a very nice job of converting 3rd downs. There's a lot to look forward to with this team but I fully expect some very tough games against the usual suspects in the Big Sky.

We’ve already defeated the toughest team on our scheduleRiveraggie

I think the jury is still out on how good Tulsa really is. They were certainly big on their lines with very athletic LB's and their RB was a load for sure but I wasn't impressed with their QB. They were also very inconsistent and really did shoot themselves in the foot with mistakes and penalties.

I'll be curious to see how they do as they continue. Maybe Ohio State will only beat them by one point when they play because that would mean we're better than OSU!

I think many of the things you noted are contributing factors for sure. It is true, however, that the more rural areas are largely more conservative than the more densely populated cities and coastal areas of northern California and I have found that there are a significant number of folks who live those rural areas who don't like seeing cyclists on "their roads."

For example, a couple of years ago was riding a 75 mile route from Foresthill out and back to French Meadows. This is a very remote route with lots of climbing. I would say that I came across less than 10 cars all day. Mosquito Ridge Road is narrow and it has a fantastic 19 mile climb section that is popular with cyclists although I didn't see a single cyclist the day I was riding it.

I was on the final return climb back up to Foresthill when I heard a vehicle chugging loudly behind me so I hugged the edge of the road as best I could. A large, dual-wheeled pickup truck pulling a horse trailer pulled up alongside of me, slowed down and a guy in a cowboy hat screamed at me to "get the f...k off the road."

I hadn't seen a vehicle in a half hour and there was no vehicle coming in the other direction so he could have easily given me space. He didn't because he obviously didn't like cyclists being on the road even though I wasn't impeding his driving in any way at all.

This is not an isolated incident for me in rural areas like that. Don't get me wrong though. I know that the majority of folks in these rural areas are not like that guy. It's just that I've had many, many more encounters like that in rural areas like that than I've ever had in more densely populated areas around Winters, Napa, Sonoma and the coast etc.

I met a cyclist on the American River Bike Trail one day who was from Plymouth and we got to chatting a bit. I told how I really enjoyed riding up in that area. His reply to me was, "I don't ride there anymore. The rednecks don't like cyclists. They'll get you killed."

On a side note, two months ago I hit some uneven pavement on a high speed, downhill, curve and my front tire pinch flatted which is essentially a sudden blowout of the tube inside the tire casing. Well, I went over the bars and hit the pavement hard. I bruised and scraped up just about everything on the left side of my body but the worst was the injury to my rib cage. I'm nearly healed now although my ribs are still not quite right.

I'm getting up there in my years, 75 in a week, and I know the risks of cycling at the level that I choose to participate in it. However, it's a sport that I love passionately. I wish it were less risky but it is what it is and I choose to continue to ride on the roads in the hills as long as I can still do it.

That's good to here, 69aggie. In areas like that, which are popular with road cyclists like myself, drivers are much more safety conscious and considerate of cyclists. I've ridden a lot on the roads around Winters, Lake Berryessa, Pope Valley, the mountains around Napa and Sonoma, areas west of Santa Rosa to the coast and along the coast from Jenner to Bodega Bay and inland from there. For the most part the motorists in these areas are considerate of cyclists. Of course, I've encountered some idiots on occasion who were driving way too fast and did not give me a safe space but, for the most part, I've generally had good experiences.

In places like Winters, for example, cyclists are important to their economies. They frequent the small mom and pop stores along their biking routes and eat in restaurants like Steady Eddy's in Winters. I've spent a lot of money over the years eating at Steady Eddy's after long rides. Great food, by the way!

I have also ridden a lot in the areas around Plymouth, Sutter Creek, Ione and the small towns like Volcano, Fiddletown and Fairplay. These areas are much more conservative and the drivers there are not as considerate towards cyclists. I love riding in the hills of Amador County but I've also had more close calls from angry drivers, especially men in their pickup trucks, than I can remember. The same goes for the hills around Penryn and Newcastle and outlying areas around Auburn, Colfax, Coloma and Placerville.

Attitudes towards cyclists change as the geographic area becomes more conservative. The more conservative and remote the area, the greater the intolerance towards cyclists. At least that's been my experience and I've spent a lot of times riding these scenic, country roads.

I mostly ride by myself on these long rides that I like to do. It worries my wife that I could get hit by an intolerant driver when I'm out riding some remote route in the foothills and then just be left for dead. I can't say it doesn't worry me at times like when I hear a vehicle coming way to fast around a curve when I'm ahead on the edge of a road with no shoulder. I guess I just accept the risk because I love the solitude and beauty of cycling in these breautiful places.

The top teams in the FCS seem to be getting better and better. I think some of the best athletes on these top FCS teams like the idea of actually getting to play rather than be a reserve on an FBS team and that they also like having a decent chance to play in the FCS playoffs and possibly play for a national championship. All of that with less pressure than there is in FBS and more time to be a student. Compelling reasons to play on a good FCS team...
