• MBB 2:30 pm Saturday: Aggies (8-4) vs Radford (6-6)
Good catch, Goags20172. I got my information from the Aggies release about today's game:

"UC Davis and Radford last met 50 years ago (Dec. 2) in a game the Aggies won by a 67-73 score."

    http://www.ucdavisaggies.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/122317aac.html

That's not correct as you noted. The Ags did indeed beat Radford 67-63 in the St Mary's Classic in 2004 under Coach Gary Stewart. The Aggies went 12-17 that year.

It's been 50 years since these two teams have played each other. The Aggies beat the Highlanders 67-63 on December 2, 1967.

Those are some good points, 69aggie.

I remember Ham well. He was a maniac but his antics were pretty comical and the fans loved him. Les is just very, very intense and when he yanks a player he usually just looks right past them as they come off the court. He gets locked into the game like a laser which is a good thing, I guess, because he makes good in game coaching decisions. His scowling intensity would bother me if I was playing for him though.

Chima did hit the deck hard at the end of the game at San Francisco when he got undercut. Also, in the game against William Jessop he had something bothering him on the inside of his knee or thigh. Could be some lingering strain...? Hope that's the case and not something simmering between him and Les.
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Lamar previously had some good wins over Tulsa, Coastal Carolina twice and UTEP. Excellent win for the Aggies.
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Les just said "he didn't want to give out too much information about Chima in order to keep the Ags' opponents guessing but he thought Chima would be ready to go tomorrow."

So, maybe and injury....??? Who knows...??
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Scott Marsh said the team went to see The Blue Man Group last night and went out to dinner at a place called "Hole in the Wall."
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
That's an outstanding win especially considering that Chima was on the bench. How about TJ Shorts with 25 points on 6 of 9 from the floor and 13 of 13 from the line. Nice contributions from everyone who got into the game.

I hope whatever is going on between Les and Chima is done and we'll be at full strength tomorrow against Radford.
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Nice run by the Ags. Up 50-40 with 11:27 to go.
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Scott Marsh just said the word he has been given about Chima is "unavailable."
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
I've never been a fan of Les' tough style of coaching...just too intense for me. He does know the game and he does get a lot out of his players but I think his barking and intensity can do more harm than good most of the time especially to players' morale.

During the last basketball coaches show Scott Marsh interviewed players from both the men's and women's team and he asked them what it was like playing for Les and Gross. I was struck by the different responses he got. The women talked about how much Jen Gross meant to them in their lives and how they felt like a family with her. Chima said it was tough when he first got to Davis because it was tough being told what he was doing wrong all the time but that he's become a better player. I think that was a thinly veiled way of saying that Les can be a real hard-ass, like you say, and, although he gets results, I'm not sure the players have the kind of relationship with him that the women have with Jen Gross.
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Lamar may run away with this game. The Ags are on pace for 30+ turnovers...wow...
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Les is not an easy coach to play for. He is intensely competitive and a tough disciplinarian. That combination does not always work well with today's athletes.
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
Scott Marsh just said that Chima will not play today and he doesn't know why. He said Chima was warming up but has been told he will not play. Wow...I wonder what's going on between Chima and Coach Les...??
  • MBB 2:30 pm Friday: Aggies (7-4) vs Lamar (8-3)
No doubt about it. This is a game that it would be very easy to be flat as a pancake. I hope that's not the case. Lamar is a very tough defensive team and the Ags have struggled to find a good offensive flow this season...not a good combination of factors for the Ags. They'll need to dig deep.

Some post-game quotes form today's Enterprise recap:

OSU HC Scott Rueck on the Aggies: “They came in here with a great plan. They’re a very proud team that’s used to winning every night, and it shows. They’re a team that’s laser-focused.”

“(Wednesday) was interesting because we honestly haven’t experienced this year a close game where we had to hold on to a lead late.”

HC Jen Gross: “I’m just extremely proud of our team. We played really hard, we played with a lot of passion,” UC Davis head coach Jennifer Gross said afterward. “There was a lot of focus and defensive urgency. I thought our defense was very good.”

“Offensively, we just struggled with that stretch in the third quarter, and that’s what kind of got us into a hole … but I’m extremely proud of our effort."

“When you’re facing 6-5 and 6-8 and they’re playing their bigs inside, it makes it more difficult to finish at the rim,” Gross pointed out. “They challenged us to make outside shots …"

“We made a few, but we didn’t make a high-enough percentage to make them think about changing their plan. It was taking us a little too long to get into our action … we just didn’t keep the ball flowing fast enough.”

I think I underestimated just how much of a size advantage OSU had over the Aggies. It's pretty tough to shoot over the kind of size that the Beavers had and I'm sure that had a lot to do with our poor shooting percentage. Holding OSU to a season low of 61 points says a lot about the Ags effort also.

I agree with everything you said, Obdh. I'd like to see the men and women ramp up their level of OOC competition also. There's a fine line though. I'm not a fan of the Dan Monson approach at Long Beach State where the 49ers often play the toughest OOC schedule in the nation and rarely win any of their games against those power teams.

Like you said, the Aggies deserved to be on the floor with OSU last night. They have the talent and they are a veteran team with good depth but, once they started missing open looks, it snowballed into very poor shooting. I was amazed that we were still within striking distance while shooting 24%. With Morgan and Rachel misfiring like they were we needed someone else to step up a can a couple of 3's and that just didn't happen which is not like this team.

OSU's big girls created problems for Morgan inside and pretty much took away her spin moves to the bucket. It was interesting, though, that the Beavers were very willing to let Morgan shoot from the high post. Their strategy was to not let Morgan beat them inside and they did that. Our problem was that our perimeter shooters were ice cold from distance also.

I think that this road trip to NY is an important couple of games for the Aggies. They have not played up to their ability in their last two games. It will be tough to travel across three time zones and play against two good teams. This will be a big test to see how this team responds to their recent adversity.

    Go Ags!
  • WBB 6 pm Wednesday: Aggies (9-1) @ #17 Oregon State (8-2)
As you noted, there was a lot of hesitation by everyone offensively and, as the shots continued to bonk off the rim, their confidence sunk also.
