Damn..I go away from the forum for a couple of hours to watch some basketball, check back in and BOOM!...BIG BREAKING NEWS...feels like I'm the last one to the party! Wow...Blue is not wasting any time getting things done.

I'm excited! We get a former Aggie who transformed Boise to greatness. Welcome home Hawk!!
  • WBB: Hofstra @ the Aggies
It did seem like the Aggies were standing around flat-footed on quite a few of the offensive boards the Pride got. Bertsch is very quick on her spin moves to the basket with the ball but she doesn't react that quickly to the ball coming off the rim. Nina Bessolo is quick and long and seems to have a nose for the ball. She's learning quickly and I think we'll see more and more of her as she gets more experience at the college level. That should help us on the boards.

Even some of the smaller Hofstra players were aggressively getting rebounds in a crowd under the basket. The whole team needs to work on blocking out and making it a goal to be more aggressive and determined rebounding. Whenever I whine about Aggie BB teams getting hammered on the boards, Aggie6thman always reminds me that rebounding is "all heart and hard work." Just gotta get the work done.
  • Coach Gould
    For the most part, yes...
  • Who is your current choice for HC for the Aggies?
No kidding...could our inflated egos survive a Slac State alum as our head coach? We might need some group therapy to come to peace with that! ;)
  • WBB: Hofstra @ the Aggies
The Lady Ags suffered their first loss of the season falling to Hofstra 64-60. The Pride exposed the Achilles heel of the Aggies by out rebounding them by 15 boards 47-32 of which 19 were offensive rebounds that led to 18 second chance points. The Ags have decent size but lack quickness and aggressiveness on the boards and it cost them the game today.

Up 58-54 with 4 minutes to go the Ags had a chance to go up by 6 or 7 but couldn't score and turned the ball over at the 2:33 mark before Epps hit a 3 to make it 58-57. With the score 62-60 Morgan Bertsch made a beautiful spin move to shake her defender but missed the wide open layup .

This was a winnable game for the Aggies. Jen Gross will need to find a way for the Ags to be more competitive on the boards or they will lose more games like this.

The Ags return to the Pavilion Friday for a 7 pm game with San Diego State followed by a trip to The Farm to face the Cardinal at 2 pm on Sunday.

    Go Ags!
  • WBB: Hofstra @ the Aggies
The Ags are locked in a tight battle with Hofstra and take a 33-30 lead into halftime. They started off the game with some hot shooting but went stone cold in the last 5 minutes of the half and the Pride crept back in it.
The Aggies have decent size but they continue a concerning trend of poor rebounding. The Pride are pounding the Ags on the boards 25-15 and have scored 14 second chance points.

4t/6th place: Oakland 79 Aggies 66 - The Ags hung tough but lost in a game that was closer than the final score.

    Comments from Coach Les:

"Oakland is a good basketball team that is going to win 20 to 25 games, win their league and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. I told my team that we went toe-to-toe with them; we have some things that we need to clean up, but I like where this team is as long as we stay healthy and continue to work," said UC Davis head coach Jim Les.

"I told the team that I was pleased overall with their effort, and I'm encouraged, not discouraged, by this tournament and where they are thus far." Added Les, "This team has a huge ceiling, I love everyone's competitive nature."

4th game in 6 days, OBUA, plus lots of travel. With 12 of the first 15 games on the road the Ags will travel over 24,000 miles before league starts. We should certainly be travel hardened by then!
  • MBB: Aggies vs Oakland (3rd Round, Great Alaska Shootout Consolation)
The Aggies fall to the Grizzlies 79-66 and will head home from Alaska with a 5-3 record overall. The difference in this game was our inability to slow Oakland's 3 point shooting 10 of 24 for 42% combined with our poor 3 point shooting 4 of 18 for 22%. We won the the battle of the boards 37-36 but were outscored at the FT line 19-12. Chima Moneke had a monster game scoring 21 and pulling down 12 boards. Mikey Henn had 11 and Siler Schneider 10.

The game was closer than the final score as the Ags. This was the 4th game for the Ags in 6 days and they have nothing to hand their heads for as they played well today against a talented team.

The Aggies are off now until next Saturday when they travel to Moscow, Idaho, to tangle with the always tough Vandals.

Martez Walker banked in a 35 foot 3 ball at the buzzer that gave Oakland the lead 37-34 at the break in an evenly matched half of play. The difference so far, as it was against Weber State, is the hot shooting by the Grizzlies from downtown - 7/13 for 54%. The Ags are battling well against the athletic Grizzlies and won the boards 15-10. Too many poor passes again for the Ags who have already have 8 TO's.

Chima Moneke is leading the Aggies with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Schneider has 8 and Henn 7.

We can win this game if we continue to play well and cut down the TO's.

    Go Ags!

    Friday games results:

Oakland 71 Alaska Anchorage 65 - The Seawolves got close near the end but the Grizzlies closed it out.

Aggies 64 Drake 58 - It wasn't pretty but the Ags played well when it counted the most.

Nevada 67 Buffalo 62 - The Wolf Pack squeaked by the Bulls in the final minute to move into the title game.

Iona 76 Weber State 54 - The Wildcats shot 56% and blistered the nets against the Aggies last night but cooled off to only 38% in a losing effort to the Gaels who will vie for the championship.

    Saturday games:

7th/8th place: Alaska Anchorage vs Drake at 1 pm

4th/6th place: Oakland vs the Aggies at 3 pm

3rd/5th place: Buffalo vs Weber State at 6:30 pm

Championship game: Nevada vs Iona at 9:30 pm
  • MBB: Ags vs Drake (2nd Round, Great Alaska Shootout Consolation Bracket)
It sounded like the game was not pretty but we ground out the W. This was a win by committee as the Ags had 9 players with 12 minutes or more of PT.

Lamar showed his leadership again and lead the Ags with 17 while shutting down the Bulldogs' leading scorer, Reed Timmer, who averages 17 ppg. Timmer, from New Berlin, Wisconsin, was recruited hard by Les but chose to go to Drake. Lemar is our stopper defender and he's doing a really good job against the best the opposition has to offer.

We did some really nice things in this game. For one, we played well down the stretch on both ends of the floor with the game on the line and hit some big shots when it counted the most. Drake had some size but we won the battle of the boards 33-18 and that's a significant improvement from last night. We also shot a good percentage: 49% overall and 41% from 3. However, we had 18 TO's and that's way too many and will need to take better care of the ball against good competition. Overall, it was a nice win and a good recovery from last night's blowout.

The Ags will play their 3rd game in 3 days tomorrow when they tangle with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies from Rochester, Michigan, located in the northern outskirts of the Detroit area. They are big, strong and athletic and they will be a very big challenge for the Aggies. We'll need to bring our A game to stay competitive with the Grizzlies.

    Go Ags!
