I feel exactly the same way about this team. I often get frustrated in the early season with the teams that Les puts together: we generally lose a lot of the pre-conference games, don't look athletic or long enough to compete with the good mid-major teams, seem to rely on primarily on defense to win and can't seem to make baskets with a good percentage, but then we eventually come around, gel together and play pretty good basketball. I have to give Les credit. He builds very disciplined teams and gets a lot out of the players he's able to bring to Davis and his teams play as a team.

This year's team is very enjoyable to watch and I think the rest of the Big West is underestimating us. Our defense is solid and we play very hard from start to finish. Our offense is communing along nicely and we are play with better pace, good ball movement and more confidence. We will not be an easy out.
  • Short term remedy to Gehrke’s departure? He’s a scholar-baller
He looks like he would be a great addition to the Ags. The Aggie tradition of placing an emphasis on high quality academics might appeal to him too.

These kind of games also give the little schools a chance to play up also against tough competition in bigger facilities. The game counts as an exhibition game only for Holy Names but it counts as a win or loss for the Aggies so it would hurt the Ags' RPI severely if they lost. Sure, Holy Names was outmanned in this one but this is the 9th time these two teams have played each other so they know what they're getting into when they schedule us and they want to play us each year if possible.

Obviously, the Aggies have trouble getting teams to come and play us in the Pavilion. This year 12 of our first 16 games were on the road and only 2 of our 4 home games were against DI teams. Les would love to have more home games against good competition but most teams don't want to play us in the Pavilion partially due to the fact that we generally have a good home court winning percentage. It's not good from the perspective of Aggie fans but all the road games really toughens up the team and builds great chemistry and that's very apparent when you look at how far this team has come from being blown out in Chicago in our season opener.

The players and fans alike had fun at this game tonight. I really liked that the whole bench got a lot of minutes. Printup, Shaw and Ba all played nearly 10 minutes each. We haven't seen much of Printup this season which has been surprising to me. His right leg was wrapped so maybe he's been injured. BJ Shaw is a player I would like to see getting more minutes. He's very athletic, quick and has a nice shot. On to the conference play now...
  • Bertsch drafted by the Dallas Wings
I believe that Morgan is the leading scorer on the professional team she plays on in Moscow, Russia.

I had a feeling that he had left the team. He saw a few minutes of PT and it didn't look like he was going to be a major player this year. I think it can be very tough for some players to leave their native countries and settle into an entirely different culture. I wish him well.

The last time I checked, I think Morgan was the leading scorer on her Moscow professional team.

New Mexico Head Coach Paul Weir:

On UC Davis and the outcome of the game:

“They are a different level, a different caliber of opponent [than our most recent opponents] and that they were going to come at us the way that they did. They had a four-point loss at Utah, a six-point loss at Cal, it’s a good basketball team.”

“I had a feeling that we were going to be in for a game like this and we were. You have to tip your cap to UC Davis for playing their hearts out and taking us right to the wire. Fortunately, we have a great resilient group of guys that continue to find a way to come out with wins. I’m thankful to have the players we have.”

  • MBB: Aggies (5-9) at New Mexico (12-2) 1 pm PST 12/29
26 fouls called on the Ags...NM hit 23-35 from the line compared to 10 of 17 for the Aggies...Neufeld and Squire fouled out and Mooney and Pepper had 4 each...

    Crowd: 10,700

Ags fall 74-69...couldn't stop their size and athleticism late in the game especially with Neufeld fouling out with 10 minutes to go...a couple of missed FT's and a couple of poor TO's decided it in the final seconds...that said, you gotta love the fight of this team...size wise it looked like men against boys but we hung in there and frustrated them...we've lost a lot of close games...I'll be happy to see the conference start...we could make some noise in the conference...

I wouldn't care if we ever scheduled NM again...nasty program...
  • MBB: Aggies (5-9) at New Mexico (12-2) 1 pm PST 12/29
Couldn't tell what started it...mad scramble for the ball and Squire had it when a NM player jumped on him and then things went wild..Squire came up furious and some players from both benches came onto the floor...Les was restraining Squire...Neufeld got a double T and Squire a T...same number of T's for NM...then NM got another T for taunting Squire a couple minutes later...they're a dirty team...
  • MBB: Aggies (5-9) at New Mexico (12-2) 1 pm PST 12/29
Nearly a brawl in front of the Aggie bench...I think 6 T's were called...

52-49 Ags with 11:48 to go. Fouls are becoming an issue for the Ags. NM has so much size and athleticism...tough for us stopping their second chance points
  • MBB: Aggies (5-9) at New Mexico (12-2) 1 pm PST 12/29
Down 36-32 at the half. We're hanging around. That 4 point play near the buzzer hurt.

We clawed our way back...only down 2...gotta take care of the ball and box out
