  • Week 10: UC Davis @ Northern Arizona
Final: Portland State 30, Weber State 18.
  • Water polo - Fall 2021
Saturday final: UCSD 11, UCD 10.

In past years this game decided the regular season champion, but the Tritons tripped up a couple of times earlier this season. Should be quite a tournament with the NCAA bid on the line.

Article on renovated Rec Pool. https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/preview-new-rec-pool-next-week
The Schall Aquatics facility (water polo, swimming & diving) is somewhat south of the renovated Rec Pool and the football field. The field hockey arena is east of that, towards Tercero. Been a long time for me, I had to pull up a map and satellite view of the campus.
  • Water polo - Fall 2021
Thursday final: UCD 13, LMU 12.

With one game to go Ags clinch best regular season record and top seed in the WWPA championships, which coincidentally they will host in a couple of weeks.

Beating the Gauchos will be tough, but a weekend in Santa Barbara isn't a bad thing.

I know nothing about Nevada criminal law, and have forgotten more California criminal law than I care to admit, but in California you might be convicted of both the DUI/vehicular manslaughter AND reckless driving, but you can not be sentenced for both. Certainly the speed and reckless nature of the driving is something the judge should be able to consider in imposing a sentence, again depending on Nevada law. Hard for me to think he would not get some serious time. In California today he would almost certainly go to prison.

The news clip from San Francisco CBS says they hope to join the NCAA next year, unitl then they are "cannibal opponents." School has an enrollment of about 500. Campus is a single building in Oakland. AD is also the football coach. Takes no salary. Bought all the uniforms himself. The team flies everywhere. He thinks they fill a void as he Raiders have left, the Warriors are heading to SF, and there is constant speculation that the A's might leave. In the interview they had a couple of transfers from Cal and Slack. One of the coaches, Desmond Bishop, has NFL experience and a Super Bowl ring with the Packers. This is all a bit weird, but what the heck, it's 2020-2021 - everything is a bit weird anymore.

Ambitious schedule Sam Houston and UCD.

    Lincoln University of Oakland, CA??
First year they have fielded a football team. All of their games are on the road. Cannot even figure out what division they are in, or if they participate in the NCAA or NAIA. They have apparently hired Gary Payton to coach the men's basketball team. They have men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball and football. How do they fit into Title IX?

I used to be pretty neutral about Michigan until they hired Harbaugh. Didn't like him at USD, Stanford, the 49ers and now UM. With this loss and a probable loss to an Ohio State University at the end of the regular season I wonder how much more those 111,000 fans will take.

That NDSU score is a strange one. Bison dominate with 44 points, but apparently give up a safety?
  • Causeway Cup, 2021-22
UCD men defeated Sac 2-1 today in soccer. Causeway Cup points are now UCD 10, Sac 5. The win assures the men of a spot in the conference soccer tournament, with the exact seed depending upon the results of a match between UCR and UCSD. With the loss Sac is eliminated from the conference tournament.

Next Causeway event(s) will be men's and women's cross country in the NCAA regionals to be held in Sacramento on November 12.

On the subject of cross country the women won the Big West conference meet this past week. The men finished fourth.

I agree completely. Sac has the easier path to a title, or even a shared title.

Sac doesn't play EWU, Weber State or Montana State this year.

Montana State is going to have something to say about the conference title too.

There is a famous early U.S. Supreme Court case concerning the Contracts Clause of the U.S. Constitution as it applies to Dartmouth's charter.

"Generations of Dartmouth students will have at least some familiarity with the 200-year-old case thanks to the oft-quoted words of Daniel Webster, Class of 1801, spoken during his argument on behalf of the College’s trustees: 'It is, sir, as I have said, a small college, and yet there are those who love it!' Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward, 17 U.S. (4 Wheat.) 518 (1819)

A friend of mine who is a Dartmouth alum has quoted that line to me more than once.

Hanover is a cold place in the winter, but it is a lovely part of the country. And, "New Hampshire has no income tax on wages and salaries. However, there is a 5% tax on interest and dividends. The state also has no sales tax."

I recall hearing Socher say that he would love to see some football games with Ivy League schools. Cost was probably a deterrent to that hope.

Finally, based on an early season match, Dartmouth has a better field hockey team than Davis.
  • Jake Maier Sets CFL Record
    October 13, 2021
"Jake Maier has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be unavailable for at least 10 days.
The Calgary Stampeders backup quarterback was placed in the CFL’s COVID-19 protocols earlier in the week, but because players can be put in the protocols for a variety of reasons, it was only confirmed Wednesday that he had tested positive."

    https://calgarysun.com/sports/football/cfl/calgary-stampeders/stampeders-qb-jake-maier-tests-positive-for-covid-19

The Stampeders easily defeated the British Columbia Lions, 39-10, on Saturday.
