Totally agree with the "block out" coaching. Very weird officiating. We were laughing at times because they had their choice of three fouls and three people and chose traveling .

Well, that was some game to watch! Very physical. Cooper had two quick fouls that limited his usefulness for most of the first half.

In the second half what I'll call the "quick hands" line-up really made a difference - forcing turnovers, getting transition buckets, and (gasp) making free throws. The defense really harried the Gouchos after they briefly took the lead.

Definitely a good win for the Ags.

At least one of the officials is a Big West regular - I've seen him for several seasons. The others I'm not so sure about.

I just shrug about officiating unless it egregious. This game wasn't that. The officiating seemed consistent over the course of the game. I hate when the officials go into the half and come out with an entirely new theory about how to call the game. THAT just does't work for me. Unless, and it's a big unless, they lost control of the game in the first half and are trying to re-establish some player boundaries. That shouldn't happen often, however.

I watched the UCSD-UCI game and the announcers were applauding the officials for "just letting them play." Which always makes me ask: "Why have rules if we're not going to enforce them?"

As I watched the game today I saw us lose the snappy passing and start dribbling more and more. That doesn't suit us. Fagbemi is especially dribble-happy and it seems to infect the rest of the team.

But it's Nico that really makes the Aggie team - when he's out there he's taking care of business - directing players but in a positive way. He contributes more than the stats show.

Great times. Remind me why we need to run away from the Big West?

The combo of Tom Woods and Gordy in the backcourt was especially nice because Woods was a terrific passer and Gordy had those lightning cuts that Tommy could pick out like no one else. Johnson and Cupps gave excellent corner support.

Toke I agree. I suppose they were worried that if Irvine missed the 2nd shot intentionally after making the first they'd have a shot at the rebound and score with maybe another foul. It's all 4D chess to me at the end, though.

It was a good win by the Ags. I'm sure the Anteaters will be VERY grumpy about it. They made some crucial mistakes. Now if the Ags could reliably shoot free throws I'd be happier. Sheesh. Take a lesson from Poly!

Nico played a strong game and Sevilla played a hard defense. Just a fine team effort by the Aggies. And a good game to watch.

I admit I'd like to strangle Turner though. I guess his players are used to him.

The Ags will need to be on target from the 3pt range, I think, and their D will definitely need to be at the highest level. If everyone is healthy and not croaking from the flu then I think we have a pretty good shot at a really good game.

There was an interesting interaction between an official and the UCD cheer squad who were sitting along the baseline in the blue area. He chased them off - telling them they needed to be behind the white line. He threatened to stop play unless they moved, which they did. I saw them talking with Rocko about it. In the 2nd half they moved to the other end of the court but eventually left before the end of the game.

So I looked up the rule. There's supposed to be "restraining line" 6' back from the baseline. During play no one is to be between that restraining line and the baseline. The backboard's support structure's leading edge is 6' from the baseline. I'm watching the women's game and the restraining line clearly marked on the court at Fullerton.

I've never seen this called before. Maybe it's becoming a player safety thing.

Sevilla was wearing his ankle braces again tonight. He hasn't in the past couple of games, I think.

Someone remind me why we want to go BCS. It makes no sense. None of it makes sense. We're in the business of making talent for the big guys. We can enjoy being competitive on the FCS landscape. But the huge fundraising requirement of FCS? Really? This is a Good Thing? Why? Let's live within our means not chase money where we will always be minor players in a small market.

If UC Davis' reputation comes from football then I don't want any part of an association with the university. Our rep comes from academics and outcomes. Graduating student athletes not semi-pro athletes - or even professional athletes.
