• Week 3: Lehigh @ UC Davis
I had talked to Fred Arp about this when he was helping with scheduling. He said a challenge is that the Ivy’s start late and only have couple non league games. Hard to get them to fly cross country for an opener v a team with 2 or 3 games under their belt. Hard for Big Sky team to fly cross country prior to opening conference (an early bye would help)

I wonder if SoCal alum kick in big bucks to help with travel expenses to entice them. Harvard goes to USD next Saturday

Still hoping to see an Ivy team. USD and Poly have done it. I’d think Bay Area Ivy alum would come out in big numbers.
  • Week 3: Lehigh @ UC Davis
There will be a contingent of Lehigh fans. I came across an alumni notice from them about the weekend ( Friday in old sac, tailgate in lot 56, etc). Always fun to see visitors. Apparently Lehigh was a growing alum population in the Bay Area ( we hired a post doc from there a couple years back)

found this online about 10:00 kickoff

‘The early morning kickoff meant people heading to Toomey Field had to drive through a thick Bay area fog to get to the stadium. That included longtime UC Davis head coach Jim Sochor, whose car ran out of gas in the foggy morning and had to walk the final half a mile to the stadium.’

USD used two different fullbacks; I wonder how many FCS teams still have one on their roster?
  • Week 3: Lehigh @ UC Davis
they gave up a lot of yards on the ground v Villanova so i would expect us to try and establish the run. They played Villanova close for the half and score might have been closer if they had concert on some of their several fourth down tries. New coach with nothing to lose. I expect them to throw a lot. Time to get a pass rush going
  • Week 3: Lehigh @ UC Davis
The game prior to Lehigh was the Betune Cookman game. I was there as a high school student and don't remember fog. Lehigh was an early start (11?) and on regional TV. Old timers still joke about colorman Ara Parsighian welcoming viewers to the 'beautiful central valley'. I thought that was a foggy morning.

Tib Belza!?!? He shows up occasionally at the games!
  • Week 3: Lehigh @ UC Davis
we get to suit up as many as we want at home and with the new redshirt rule I’m sure we will see some new faces. I think USD took advantage of their extra men last Saturday in the heat.
  • Keelan Doss: Raider Watch
"I didn’t evenriot for a professional football team before this"

i was going to correct this for you, BUT, it is the raiders........
  • USC AD Lynn Swann resigns
Daryl Gross has a successful track record there and just down the road at CSULA. He was at the USD game
  • Week 3: Lehigh @ UC Davis
42 year grudge match! Let’s get this thing rolling this week cuz it gets really hard after that
  • Week 2: UC Davis @ San Diego
USD had a nice game plan. Power running early, play action, lot of short passes and burn clock. Take pressure off the new QB. That works if they keep the game close-> that’s why I thought that kick return was a huge deal. They executed nicely and their QB made some big third down long conversations on the run.

Our line play on both sides wasn’t great which probably changed our game plan.
  • Week 2: UC Davis @ San Diego
I believe if they recover it’s a TD. I googled it and don’t see anything that contradicts that. Had he not fumbled it would have been interesting. tackle inbounds and game is over ( no time outs). Out of bounds, a couple seconds left from 1 or 2.

Game looks better after old town margaritas last night, and day trip to Coronado today. Back to reality Monday. Looking forward to home opener AT NIGHT next week. Tired of sweating like mad at a game ( yeah, I know, Montana kickoff at 1:00) Still have no idea why they played at 2:00. Wasn’t a PFL game vs someone two time zones away
  • Week 2: UC Davis @ San Diego
give their QB a lot of credit for that. He converted several long third downs after getting flushed from the pocket and making a great pass.

That kick return was huge. Up 14-0, have all the momentum, and all the sudden they are right back in it. Seems like they got it right back and scored again and then we had a battle.

Run defense is my concern. They were averaging 4-5 yards a carry. Even when we brought pressure to the right spot, we never stuffed them. And that was a young line. Gotta fix that soon!

Play calling was interesting at times. Goal line INT on a weird formation, the 3 runs on first and goal from the 20, fumble on a reverse....
  • Week 2: UC Davis @ San Diego
I’d be shocked if it’s full. In the past, it was about half full for our games down there. Maybe the 2:00 start, and early in the school year makes a big difference? Their largest attendance last season was 3100
  • Bad press for the Band-Uh!
Bob’s article covers the situation very well.
  • Week 2: UC Davis @ San Diego
We fly out at 11:30. As opposed to our trip to San Diego State two years ago, it’s AM this time not PM. That wasn’t my finest moment in travel planning.
  • Week 2: UC Davis @ San Diego
Remember last year’s game got dicey. They had a pick 6 then scored immediately after our quick turnover to turn 20-7 into 21-20. Remember Plough called a hook and lateral to Doss on next possession that kick started us to a big win.

Year before was close for a half. Doss scored on a 75 yard bomb a minute into the game, but was 14-7 us at half. Hawk went for a 4th and 1 on OUR 30 that broke for long TD, and that broke it open.

No turnovers, get ahead early and pull away
