I watched the Poly game. poly’s backup qb, who started last year actually did fairly well. It was a pretty evenly matched entertaining game.

I was at that game - 41 years ago with my roommates - ouch.

It was still Far Western Conference and the overall competition was not as stiff as now.

Another thought about Hawkin’s early statement about this year’s team being “the best ever”. I would say that 5 teams in Big Sky are better than last year (Montanas, Weber, Sac, and Idaho). And Poly is better but still down. I think the reality is that other teams have improved, so you have to improve more than those to gain an edge. Regardless, I do not think this years team is better than last year’s unless one compares against the team of the last 4 or so games of last year’s season.

yes, as I noted EDT. I think we go standard time in a couple weeks.

Interesting “discussion” going on on the Bobcat nation board. There is a pretty heated discussion on who should start at QB for them now that Mellot is cleared. I the the saner heads are saying leave Chambers in but many are saying that Mellot should start (apparently the touchdown Tommy bunch still thinking about last year and the fact the Mellot is a local boy from Butte. From my observations Chambers is a far better passer and equal or better runner. He is also bigger so takes hits better. Mellot had the Luxury of having McCutheon grabbing floated 50/50 balls. Will be interesting to follow the “controversy”. IMO crazy to demote Chambers after what he has done the past 3 games.

Hawkins always has interesting/entertaining press conferences. The fake punt was on college game day (didn’t know till pointed out in press conference).

I found it interesting/frustrating that both the Montana media and ESPN stats confused Justin Poerio for Jackson Cloyd. They do have the same jersey numbers but their name in on their jersey too. Now Cloyd is going to have to explain to his grandkids why his career rushing stats are 0 carries and no yards rather than an impressive 23 yard average. Interestingly, I heard Jackson Cloyd’s name called on the intercom at the Bozeman airport on Tuesday for a flight leaving to LAX (he played at Orange Lutheran, so must have been him). Never saw him show, and Hawk said Mon-Wed. We’re normal days with Th/Fri off for players in bye week so don’t know what that was all about.

Spool to 1:28:50 for fake punt in “you had one job” segment. I thought the blue helmets looked pretty slick in person.

Weber up 38-21. Been listening to the EWU feed and it is pretty rich that they are complaining about Weber playing dirty. They have been to some extent, but EWU is no one to complain. An EWU player has been ejected. EWU main announcer is good but the color guy is a big whiner.

Montana State scored all their points in first half then took foot off the pedal and ran pretty much exclusively to run time off clock.

NAU beats SLO in good, close game.

From a source who will remain unnamed. Tattersall is out for the year and so may Buchanan be (who may play <=4 games if able and get a medical redshirt?).

sorry to hear that. You are preaching to the choir here, so maybe a bit misdirected. I am sure no one on this board is that person. My wife and I attended the game and stopped by the tailgate of an msu fan who I had linked up on bobcat nation (we are not player parents). I gave him a NC State shot glass and a sleeve of CA logo golf balls. We had a great experience and ignored the few drunk students who came and went in the section we were in (kind of expected). Otherwise we chatted with the “older” Bobcat fans and had a good time.

only a moderately easier opponent for the Grizz. Their schedule to date has been the easiest in the big sky.

brawl of the wild. I’ll definitely be pulling for Montana State.
  • ESPN Failure
ESPN is owned by disney (who yanked their channels from dish and sling on a college football game day). If it isn’t making them more money or hurting their competition they don’t care. What they have done in the past with similar situations is put the subsequent game on ESPN news until the prior game finishes. I don’t know if they did that in this case.

Why are we giving the ball to little Perez on 4th and 1?88Aggie
My exact thought on a drive that was critical to stay on the game. Other thoughts from being at the game:
-great place to watch the game. Noise was louder than in the Fargo dome when we went there. Having to do silent counts all game is a definite disadvantage for the offense.
-defense looked confused at times and obviously couldn’t contain chambers. Maybe more spy or zone defense would have helped, but I doubt the outcome would have changed. Up until this game the D had played well.
-other than Gilliam who always shows up, I though Kraft and Larison looked good. In my opinion, Kraft is the best receiver the Aggies have now. I wish Babb would get more playing time. Davis was sort of a non-factor tonight. Kraft just looks like he knows what to do and is deceptively quick and fast. Hutton did a good job too. Although I have not been a fan of Hastings, I thought he did pretty well last night. His best attributes are getting rid of the ball quickly and making decent reads. The interception was puzzling - don’t think it was a misread between him and receiver, and must of been just a poorly thrown ball. There were 2 or 3 times when Hastings and receivers were on a different page. Still suffering from a lack of downfield passing.

-overall I though play calling was good. I think the play calling is built around the skills/limitations of the current offense.

MSU just had far more big plays. Lack of big plays has been an issue all year, and failing to score TDs. Ball moved well last night but obviously need to score besides FG. Gomez’ field goals had a lot of steam on them last night. Obviously kick off strategy, other than the kick-off into the end zone to start the second half was puzzling and unsuccessful. Punting was a bit better but watching warmups and game punts, still a bit of a crap shoot. So, special teams still need work.

Don’t know how they are going to sit Chambers for Mellot - he is an effective of a runner and better passer.

I made it a point to greet some of the players as the exited the field through the portal. All acknowledged and smiled/had polite responses. Made me proud to be an Aggie.
  • Week 5: UC Davis @ Montana State
Well chambers and their o-line was the difference. Line gave him plenty of time time to pass or pull it down and he is a very dangerous runner that the Aggies simply did not contain. 203 yards running from a quarterback says it all. I thought the offense looked better. Gilliam again doing all he could. Field goals were made but we needed tds. Don’t understand the short kicks unless you are guaranteed to tackle them immediately. Opening kick of second half was deep into the end zone. Why not just do that all the time? 25 yard line is better than
35+ I missed what seemed to be a big return to Aggie after we scored on second half - and were in the game - I was in the head. Then 3 plays later they were in end zone.
  • Week 5: UC Davis @ Montana State
    Chambers is killing us.
  • Week 5: UC Davis @ Montana State
Just got to get more stops. The ags are moving the ball. I can see holes from my corner end zone seat.
  • Week 5: UC Davis @ Montana State
I would spy too. But the d line needs to get more pressure on him. Nothing near a sack yet.
  • Week 5: UC Davis @ Montana State
I was puzzled by the time out too. They didn’t seem to need it for defensive alignment.
  • Week 5: UC Davis @ Montana State
my thought exactly. I can only surmise that Gomez doesn’t have the leg to kick It into the end zone.
