I wonder what the door to door travel time getting to a remote Big Sky location is compared to getting to Harvard.

It’s not great PR when you get blown out. I really think the embarrassment we had with the games against Cal and Fresno State were net negatives to recruiting and attendance.

I wasn’t advocating playing either UCLA or Cal, just saying Northwestern might not be any easier. My main point is.that we should schedule teams where we might have a chance for an upset, and avoid programs that are consistently top tier FBS. Some FBS schools are beatable by teams at our current level about 50% of the years. San Jose state is an excellent example. Two or three years ago they were pretty good, last year they were pretty bad. Hawaii and Nevada are up and down teams. Stanford has gone through periods like that, in 2005 we caught them on a down year, but they’ve been consistently good since so let’s not schedule them. Once we start beating teams like Nevada, San Jose State and the best teams in our league the we can revisit playing Cal, Stanford etc. Think NDSU which started by beating Ball State and Minnesota when UMN was really horrible,

Northwestern might be a little challenging; sometimes they are really good. Too far to travel to get pounded; we might as well play cal or UCLA. Better to schedule Rice.
Service Academies would be nice to schedule although they were pretty good this year.
Although we can’t foresee the future we should avoid games where it unlikely we would ever win.
But some of the FBS teams vary so much year to year that we would have had a shot with last years team. San Jose, Hawaii and Reno are examples. Their valley years drop below our good years, so it’s not hopeless, although no sure win. I wish we had played any of those 3 last year.

    Not at the moment

Back in the seventies when we hosted Reno the game program stated that they were our oldest rival dating back to 1912 or something similar. I’m in favor of playing all the local non pac 12 teams, I know we can get blown out by any of them but they’re all up and down and it could be competitive.

    Davis dropped wrestling in 2010.
Up until then we had occasional football players in wrestling team.
Davis was prominent wrestling team with a national reputation.
  • 2018 Recruiting List
Davis used to participate in the PAC-12 in wrestling until we dropped the sport.
We had several football players who wrestled.
When we first played North Dakota State we dominated their offfenaive line and their coach said that Davis and Cal Poly’s defensive line were like wrestlers and they couldnt get them off their feet.
Leads to the question: is there much overlap in skills between wrestling and defensive line?
  • 2018 Recruiting List
Remember we are adding two premium defensive line recruits to the five who were either freshmen or redshirts last year. Haven’t seen these guys much yet there are some quality recruits among the redshirts and last years freshmen. Few players make large contributions as freshmen, but come into their own as sophomores and juniors. Similar in regards to the rest of the defense. We won’t be the same team on D next year as this last.

10 offense 7 defense is not really unbalanced. Players sometimes change sides also, some of the offensive players were two way players.
In a way as the position names reflect there are fewer distinct defensive positions. DL LB and DB as compared to OL, TE, WR, RB, QB.
Offer scholarships to best players, even if it doesn’t seem to be an immediate need. Probably will balance out over time. Worst thing is to waste scholarships on guys who don’t warrant one.

UCD will also bring in scores of walk-ons, including Bee All-Metro linebacker Jason Gallagher of Jesuit, All-Metro tight end Garren O’Keefe of Colfax and All-Metro utility player Justin Poerio of Oak Ridge.

A score is twenty, plural implies at least 40. I think that’s probably an exaggeration.

on the Aggie site video Matt looks like an all around TE. Blocking and catching. Looks big against JC opponents. Played one year of varsity basketball at Montgomery and was honorable mention all league.
We added an entire offensive unit except running backs, with a couple of additional receivers thrown in.

Nice class. Pesefea? Sure looked like he's going to play for us based on family tweets

4.6 in the 40 is ok but not too great for a 5’7” running back. Seems to have good hands and is pretty shifty. But I think Gilliam from last year was bigger and the same speed.

and 0 running backs after only two last year, if you exclude the ccsf transfer last year. What if anything do we know about redshirt Ulonzo Gilliam? We need a speed tailback as a change of pace even if we go with Tehran as the primary tailback. None of our returning tailbacks have above average speed for this level.

Do you find it interesting that none of the guys on the list in page 1 went to FCS schools in our state or our league? Almost all FBS. Perhaps we lost some that were never on your list but it appears as though our peers are not our competitors in recruiting? Surely some player we offered picked Cal Poly or San Diego... No?

Perhaps the number of DBs recruited this year are intended to address the coverage issue Thetoe highlights.

They may not have started but Inoke Raikadroka and Zack Pettit played some as freshmen. I’m sure there are others
We’re kind of thin at DT so there is an opportunity if he can seize it.

I saw where San Jose blames their tough season due to playing two ranked teams and Texas on the road to start season. Said it led to injuries to their young physically immature players. They apparently brought in 40 players last year so have a lot of young guys. They hope working on strength will lead to improvement and avoid injury,
Same prescription a good idea for us.
