I heard that game on KDVS and I do remember thinking how unfair it was that it was effectively a home game for UNLV. I don't remember the score being that close, though and wonder if we were a lot further behind most of the game.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that Cal Poly upsets Long Beach, who will still be reeling from their loss to the Aggies. Also, the Mustangs are a lot better than their 1-18 record indicates.

The win over the Beach reminded me of a game I went to in March 1969 against SF State. We were tired for the lead in the Far West Conference and the Golden Gators had already beaten us at Davis. I seem to recall that their gym was packed with Aggie fans and the old CAAMMB. The teams were evenly matched and it went into double OT. At the end of the second OT, Bob Johnson, a 6-5 forward picked up a loose ball with second left and calmly hit a 10 foot J to win the game and a lead for the title. Unfortunately, the Ags got upset the very next night at Hayward and the league sent both schools to Las Vegas for the first round of the NCAA Division 2 playoffs. I believe we lost to UNLV. That was the most exciting game I have ever seen live.

Remember when we were concerned about this squad's inability to hit free throws? In this game they hit for 82.5% (thanks mostly to Johnson and Pepper). It felt like The Beach was matching them, but they only hit 55.6%. That was the difference down the stretch.

If only one of the Ags shots had fallen earlier, but I'll take OT. Both Traores have 4 fouls.

Ags slumping all of a sudden. They gotta pick it back up.

The Beach is 3rd in the nation in rebounds per game, behind only UAB and Alabama, but Ags were out-rebounding them at the half 22-17!

Pepper scoreless, but Anigwe taking up the slack with 11. Ty looking good except for one blown dunk.

    I started watching at tip-off, so I didn't see any pre-game video.

Did you notice the students at the game on Thursday who brought large pepper grinders to the game? That was really cool.
  • MBB: UCSB (22-7, 13-5) at UC Davis (17-12, 10-7) Thurs., Mar. 2, 6:00 pm
Yes, there were only 2 seconds left on the shot clock, so a lob was the most likely play to succeed.

If UCD does get the 6 seed, who would we want to play at the 3 seed? I haven't done the math, but it seems like it could be UCI, UCR, UCSB or Hawai`i. The only one of those teams we've beaten is Hawai`i, so I'd go with that.

A key play by the Gaucho's coach was that in-bounds play at the end where Norris took the lob and the pass in just made it within 5 seconds. They must have practiced that play enough to know that the Aggies would first try to defend Norris inside but he faked going out and then drove in just in time to get the ball and slam it home. That was with 25 seconds left in the game and we had to foul. Credit UCSB for not only making that play but for hitting their free throws, 4 of 4.

It was great to see Adebayo being aggressive on offense. I wish he would at least show his jump shot so teams could not ignore him on the perimeter, though. Also important to note that Lose and Beasley went 3 of 3 from 3.

That's a heartbreaking loss. The Aggies played well enough to win, but if they can play that well against the Beach, they should get the 6th seed. Good to have Beasley and Lose back. Borra and Adebayo played very well. We needed just a little but more more Ty and a little bit less of bad calls by the refs.

Ajay Mitchell has no points? UCSB has no offensive rebounds. If we had been able to make some of the bunnies we missed it would be 43-36.

ESPN has UCSB as a consensus 2.5 point favorite.
