• The Home Stretch
I remember a game in Hickey where Ham was just chewing on his towel and stomping his feet so hard you could here it over the crowd noise. Finally, he couldn't take it anymore and went up about 4 rows in the stands behind the team and sat there chewing his towel for a minute or two. One thing he had in common with Coach Les is how hard his teams played and how much he got out of the players he had.
  • WBB: Aggies (16-11, 11-3) at CSUN (11-17, 6-8) 7 pm Thursday, March 5th
Getting hammered on the boards by CSUN doesn't bode well for the Aggies if they were to get to the NCAA Tournament and draw #3 Oregon like Oldbanduhalum predicts. The Ducks have 6 players over 6'4 including one each at 6'7 and 6'6, 2 at 6'5 and 2 at 6'4. It would be a disastrous draw for the Aggies.

I know the Ags will play hard to win the Big West Tournament and make it into the NCAA but we'd have a much better chance at winning a game or two in the WNIT.
  • The Aggies in 2020 - A Look Ahead & Offseason Talk
Hawk is a rare head coach who knows what's truly important in life and he shows that to his players by example. Awesome coach!
  • The Home Stretch
Les wasn't doing anything that at the moment he got the T that would have indicated that he was fired up. He was standing, as he does nearly entire game, and was talking with to the ref who had his back turned to him and, all of a sudden, the ref got pretty demonstrative and slammed a T on him so he must have said something uncomplimentary.

Les has toned it down a lot this season compared to what we have seen a times in the past. He doesn't stomp much at all anymore and he seems to have really backed off lighting into his players and he has also been less overtly critical of the team in his post-game, radio interviews when the team has played poorly. He still won't tolerate it when he thinks his team is playing with a lack of energy and aggression. That will set him off like a stick of dynamite but no good head coaches tolerate what they see as a lack of effort. I actually think that this may have been one of Les' best coaching jobs he's done given how far this team has come from the start of the season.
  • The Home Stretch
...and if Les didn't get a T in the first half resulting in Hawaii hitting 2 FT's which ended up being huge considering we lost by 2...
  • The Home Stretch
We survived our meltdown last week against Long Beach but not this one. Some teams seen to just have your number and Hawaii seems to be that team for the Aggies. We lose to them most of the time. That last 3 they hit for the win was deja vu of how we lost in Hawaii. We got sloppy with the ball and didn't get create good shots in the final 3 minutes and Hawaii made the plays down the stretch.

I don't like it when it seems that Les has his team trying to take time off the clock when we have a big lead in the final minutes. We did that tonight and then ended up taking a poor, rushed shot as the shot clock ran down to the final seconds. I think that takes the the players out of their normal offensive rhythm.

Then after we misfire or turn the ball over...Hawaii gets hot an drains a few 3's and suddenly the lead is down to 3. We're 31 games into the season and we we're still not closing out games when we have the lead. Hawaii, on the other hand, has won something like 6 or 7 games this year after trailing going into the last 4 minutes of the game and two of their victims were us.

Nice crowd. We need to come out with good, aggressive energy and keep it going.
  • The Home Stretch
My wife and I will be there also. Not sure how we're going to keep 6 feet away from everyone though!

The Athletics Department is encouraging fans to arrive at least 20 minutes early so they can see the ceremony for our four seniors playing their last home game. Joe Mooney, Rogers Printup, Stefan Gonzalez and Matt Neufeld have all been outstanding in their time here and they will leave some big shoes to fill when they are gone.

Anthony Villegas 5'10 192 RB from Palma HS in Salinas.

SALINAS — Anthony Villegas puts on a show each week. This time there were college scouts in the stands to witness it. For those that weren’t, there’s film worth watching.

The Palma tailback put together a highlight reel in one game, rushing for 318 yards while scoring four touchdowns in the second half in Saturday’s 45-38 win over Aptos at Rabobank Stadium.

“I truly believe he’s one of the best backs in California,” Palma coach Jeff Carnazzo said. “There are schools missing out. Size isn’t the issue.”

The 5-foot, 10-inch Villegas had touchdown runs of 81, 61, 56 and 31 yards, giving him 28 on the season. He’ll go into his final regular-season game with 1,682 yards in just nine games.

“He’s at another level,” Carnazzo said. “Look at the film and see how he runs away from defenses in the open field.”

The Aggies need to get ready for teams to press us relentlessly in tight games. Teams with the athleticism and length of LB will give us fits. I could barely believe what I was seeing. We just kept making mistake after mistake: trying to dribble through double and triple teams, inbounding the ball to a player trapped in the corner, the ball handler pulling up the dribble and then making an awkward, lazy pass, players watching instead of going hard to the ball handler to get open...to say we were rattled is an understatement!

You hav to credit LB though also. They were double and triple teaming the ball and yet seemed to have all the passing lanes cut off at the same time. When there's a double or triple team, someone has to be open but we would get trapped and they would make it real difficult to see the floor. We've got some work to do on the press this week for sure.

The last 4 minutes was brutal to watch...we escaped with a W....
  • Coach Katz' contract not renewed at Sac?
Katz has done a good job considering the Hornets play in perhaps the poorest facility in all of D1 basketball. It's hard to imagine many quality coaches who would want to come in and take over the Sac program.

7-3 start even with all the injuries is pretty darn good!

The game breaks the previous Big West Conference record for the longest game by innings that stood since March 30, 1973 when Long Beach State and San Jose State played 20 innings. It falls just short of the NCAA record of 25 innings, set by Texas and Boston College on May 30, 2009.

Nice crowd for both games today. Jen Gross has really got a great program going.

We had lots of trouble stopping LB's athletic bigs in the paint but our 3's kept us out in front until we collapsed against their press. It was agonizing to see The Beach take the lead after we made TO after TO in the final 4 minutes. Gonzo's crunch time 3 was a thing of beauty. I'm surprised when he misses anymore. Joe got it going too and that was nice to see. I hope Neufeld is able to suit up against Hawaii next Thursday. It would be a shame if he misses his last home game.

Irvine was running all over SB the last time I checked. It looks like they may run the table right into the BW Tournament and they'll be big favorites to win that too.

Neufeld is in street clothes. Looks like we’re playing small ball again tonight.
