  • Aggie Stadium questions
I went online to get football (and basketball) specific shirts. downtown store had a copy of football shirts, but the one my wife wanted was only in one size.

i only saw a handful of guys in yellow jerseys being held out. of course, yesterday was the first day in full pads which might be part of the reason.

Made it out to practice yesterday morning. i got winded just watching. great pace, no wasted time out there. kids were very energetic in all the drills. very competitive atmosphere. DB's were pushing the WR's, WR's were pushing the DB's, and the individual groups were pushing each other. The one-on-one passing drills were especially competitive. some great catches against great defense. good breaks from the DB's to break up passes on crisply run/thrown routes. just alot of fun to watch. new QB from Long Beach looked sharp. Very athletic, quick release, accurate. Doss stands out. Spencer looks very good as a slash-type -> caught a ton of passes, and ran the offense well. I really liked what I saw. We'll be much more fun to watch, much more competitive. How that translates into wins against our tough schedule (home schedule is really tough) remains to be seen.

Ran across Portland Aggie and his lovely wife in the bookstore. Only disappointment in the day was the limited shirt selection at the MU bookstore and Downtown Store. You'd think basketball and football would be highlighted more, but not so.

    Wednesday = 9-11am @ Howard Field
  • Call from Aggie Athletics
seems to be more outreach this year. i have frequent contact since i have season tickets and am a donor, but i recently had a call about BrewFest from someone in the ticket office. supporters need to feel that their support is appreciated.

looks like he won't be intimidated by big crowds!
  • Ags Will Play at North Dakota State in 2019
1982 was Ken's game in the semi -> he got hurt in the 2nd half. goal line stand to win in the Russell Drive endzone. we lost in '83 with Barry as the QB.

how about the 2006 game? they came for a November game as #3 in the nation. we rolled them...in the first half, leading 24-0. they stormed back, scoring 28 in a row, the last on a TD pass with 4 seconds to go. my son was a freshman that year, and he and i were standing in that corner of the south end zone. we were stunned. THAT was a tough loss.

Rick Mohr was an awfully good pass rusher. He played a couple years with me, just after Merrill. He went on to a very successful career up in Canada (as did a number of guys from that era).

they seem really high on the Long Beach CC transfer, Jake Maier, who won't be here until the summer. should be an interesting competition.
  • Sping Football
he wasn't at the practice i attended a couple weeks back, and someone told me he was no longer playing.

how'd the running backs look? we're going to need someone to step in because Josh Kelly is no longer with the program.

i think it will be more of a controlled scrimmage, lots of situational stuff. but not a traditional game.
  • Mikey Henn is transferring
i'm a little shocked at this based on his increased role in the BW tourney and in the NCAA's.

hope all the best for him; i liked his intensity and thought he contributed a lot as a freshman
  • 2017 Recruiting
Wikipedia (the source of all knowledge. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject, so you know you are getting the best possible information.) says:

"In some instances, a college coach/recruiter may designate an athlete as a "preferred walk-on" during the scouting process. In this situation, the athlete is assured a spot on the team, but the coach is unable or unwilling to offer a scholarship."

that seems to be the general consensus on a google search.
  • Coach Gould
i just had a co-worker leave here to work at Stanford. one of the big draws was the tuition assistance program:
'Receive assistance with up to four years of undergraduate college tuition (a maximum of $20,625 per year as of 2012-13) for eligible dependent children attending approved colleges and universities. Staff members qualify for this program after completing five years of continuing benefits eligible service.'

co-worker has 3 kids that will be hitting college within a few years of each other.

i was talking to Fred Arp (who has helped with scheduling over the years) about the Ivy's. its a challange because they start their season 2 weeks after ours. it limits the dates you could play them to the 3rd week of our season -> and they seem reluctant to fly cross country for their first game of the year, against a team with 2 game under their belt. i know USD and Poly have hosted Ivy's in the past 5 years or so. i'd love to see a home and home. you'd think an Ivy would like to come to the (outer) Bay Area for their alum.
  • Les Reportedly to Be Interviewed for Cal Head Coaching Position
i think Les has done a really nice job at Davis, and think he has the program on a upward trajectory. I think he likes Blue, and Blue will do what he can to keep him aboard. Sounds like May reached out last week, which is a good sign.

i would think the Berkeley folk would not be excited about a Les hiring. this is their second major hiring in the past few months, and they need to make a big splash. Les' overall record at Davis is not going to get the Old Blue reaching for their wallets for season tickets and/or donations.

    at least, that's my hope....LesGoDancingAgain!
  • #16 Aggies (23-12) vs #1 Kansas (28-4)

every time they show the players in interviews, they just come off better and better. great ambassadors for a great university. what an experience for them. what a great time to be an Aggie!

when you make it to the NCAA AND have seniors who are about to graduate with degrees, it shows that D1 success and academics can coexist. what other event can bring the entire campus, community and alumni together like this. i'm hoping some day making the NCAA will be more routine, but it will always be a community builder!
