Finally a conference worse than the MAC!
  • Baldwin out at Cal Poly
I don’t remember which game it but USD played at UCD to end the season twice. 2005/6? 2006/7? Something like that. I was at one of them and not sure which one. 1 of only 2 times I sat on opposing side at the toom for Easy space w buds (all guys who played at Davis). Also there right in front of us was Marshawn Lynch, high school team mate of Josh Johnson - supporting his dude. Would take prob only a few mins of comparing schedules w cal to figure out which year it was but too lazy.

My two cents....NDSU by 20+. Almost certain the Samford backup QB, Cirittendon, goes again as Heirs is nursing a hand injury. He played like 5 snap last week and had to come out. Might see something similar this week. Backup is solid but not Heirs and this is a different animal in the fargodome. Mismatch along the lines will show over time and anyone with a rushing pulse has mashed against Samford. Last week SELA 348 at 7.1. Mercer had no issues either. Bison missing their best back in Luepke but ran the ball much better than I figured last week again a Montana team I thought was pretty weak but could hold up decently in the trench. They did not. By 2h they were cooked. This Bison team a few notches down from those of years past mainly driven by the QB. Gotta find a team that just slows the run a bit and forces the Qb to make plays. That how you beat them and that's not Samford.
  • Transfer Portal
By my count (and I did in manually off top of my head so it prob “mostly accurate”) 12 starting FCS QB’s are in the portal. Few others that started half the year and lost job like Carson Camp & Trent Green’s kid at Long Island. This is the most talent I’ve seen in the portal. Lots of starters/contributors looking for changes.

The IW SOS wasn't good - in the 100's but their offense is so explosive. Their game 1 beatdown of SIU was by far their most impressive result, imo. The literally played no one the las 6 weeks until the Furman game. The loss to SELA (who lost to a Samford team with their backup QB last week) was surprising and came on a hail mary at the end of the game. Sac has been way more battle tested and wont have trouble scoring but IW offense is fun to watch. Interested to see how they fare against the Hornets. IW struggled in the 2nd half last week to put up points vs Furman (10 points over 28 mins) but dont be fooled by the final score. They dominated that game. 613 yards to 332. Had the Furman defense on the field for almost 100 plays. 6.3 YPP vs 5.2 - close b/c 3 turnovers and 16 penalties.

The IW head coach also took the Texas St job last week. Will continue to coach the team through the playoffs.

Sac could have won that game by 3 td's if they could execute in the red zone/stopped turning it over w picks. Richmond had 56 yards on their final 7 drives. Weather a factor for both teams but the Sac defense made some nice adjustments. Udinski/Herres combo was fun to watch, both at VMI & Richmond.

Lindsey Scott Jr poses a whole different level of threat for Sac this weekend. He isn't the kid of a year ago prone to stupid mistakes. He's basically cleaned that up and become the most dangerous QB in FCS. IW gonna get 30 but Sac prob will too. Should be a fun game.

Watched #28 play in person 4-5 times this year. Kid is a baller.
  • What Will It Take to Keep Pace with the Success of Sac State Now?
this is a good Twitter account to follow: @farrellportal

This is from one of their recent tweets:

FCS schools that have had the most scholarship players enter the portal since 8/1

    VMI: 12
    Wagner: 11
    Lamar: 10
    Norfolk St: 9
    Northern Colorado: 7

I'll add a third/fourth - Continue to recruit well & dont get crushed by the transfer portal. Last year was good, one big loss. There are 230 in the FCS portal already in 24 hours. Insane.

    Of note:

-Bison losing guys NOW who are contributing - ie not going to play in the playoffs b/c in portal. Huge names? No but guys who were getting on the field. 3 of them.
-VMI, Wagner, Bucknell, and Penn are like 40 of the kids in - those programs getting pillaged.
-Couple of impactful QB - Seth Morgan at VMI and Carson Camp at USD. Camp lost his job late in year but ive watched a lot of him. In the right spot he'll excel. Talented kid.
-Closer to home, Texas AM Commerce, an Aggie opponent next year, had their best player (WR) enter this morning - he's already got offers from NC St, Ville, Wash St, Utah, La Tech among others.
  • 2022 FCS Playoffs
Lost every game against a good teams and the Nova loss stands out as a BAD loss. Their win against RI was their best, who was on the playoff fringe. The committee rewarded softer scheduling. If UCD had traded out SDSU or Cal for Utah Tech they are 7-4 and unquestionably in playoffs Its sad the committee got so hung up on 6 wins. UCD wasnt even in the first four out. Just an absolutely pathetic showing and inability to truly look at resumes.

Davis -9 vs Delaware on a neutral if game was lined for this weekend.
  • 2022 FCS Playoffs
Fwiw, FAMU just isn't very good. Lower tier conference. To put in perspective, Northern Arizona would be a favorite over FAMU on a neutral.

Montana over the Aggies is a travesty. There is no comparison. Davis lost to Cal and 4 teams in the top 7. Beat Idaho on the road while Montana lost at home and beat no one of significance. One less win but better resume. Reward the resume not a number. Combined record of the teams Montana beat: 19-58. That’s a UCD v MOntana convo where much is comparable. There are other teams that could argue should be in over Davis. Ags had a brutal schedule. Needed that 7th win. Tough. Chatty? Maybe. Others? Maybe. Just tough to see Montana be rewarded. If Montana was outside the top 25 coming into the season no chance they make it.

Ags would be favored over many teams that made it in btw…. If you went off power ratings (numbers used to make gambling lines) Davis is anywhere from 5th to 14th.

Been a minute since I posted. Hope all is well w everyone.
  • Aggies vs Bears
2 days. Fired up. Going to game with big group of former Ags/players. Tailgating starts early. Not much time for thoughts but someone already said it. The Cal secondary is absolutely no joke. And UCD has always struggled to run the ball against P5 FBS comp. Need to get that run game to work in some form, passing lanes won’t be easy to find. Expect lots of short/intermediate passes to find ways to move the ball. Ags a 13 point dog feels fair. I expect lower scoring. Prob more thoughts later.

I’ll be watching every FCs game I can get my eyes on tomorrow. Excited to see SDSU (and their freshman Gibbs) agaiNst Minny tomorrow night. That Jacks team is loaded, but breaking in frosh Qb. NAU in an interesting one with Mizzou st with Cookus back. Another QB back, Jacob Knipp for No Colorado who is vey talented when he can stay healthy. If he gets protected tomorrow the Bears should be able to hang around w/ SJSU

Gubrud denied eligibility by NCAA but plans to appeal. Remember how I said I read he suffered two injuries but yet a couple of us on here couldn’t find the second? Well, neither could the NCAA. Lol. So denied.
  • Keelan Doss to play in the East-West Shrine Game
McSorely’s awful accuracy allow KD to make a highlight diving catch. He caught some hype after that about his week. Safe to say he’s made some $$$ this week. Good for him.
