  • Jordan Perryman to transfer
He missed a game in 2019, so I think that qualifies.

The excess eligibility is the colleges looking at how can I make a buck too. Society would be better served by more scholar athletes not the same ones for twice as long

True at the top end but so far we’ve been effected by the fact that NCAA has extended eligibility ridiculously, first by letting freshmen play, then letting redshirts play four games, then by the loose criteria for extra season if injured even after playing five games, and finally the COVID year doesn’t count. So athletes can be in a program for six or seven years, when it only takes four to earn a degree. So after the mission of earning a degree is accomplished why not seek another experience?
The extended eligibility is unfair to later year players, who don’t get the scholarships they would otherwise be offered.

I was thinking more of the transfers from four year colleges. The JC guys are kind of a given, there are some every year, many without a scholarship to begin with.
So guys like Castles, Smalley, Woods, Peyton Dixon, Albright, White (Navy). Martz is sort of a transfer from a four year Northern Colorado, but he never played there. Similar to Cloyd. Some stars, some not.

I’m sure we’ll get some transfers, we probably avererage one or two a year. Question is will they be impact players. Transfers that are major contributors here have been rare. But I agree that that’s the logical explanation of why we put out few offers. I guess they have some indication they’ll get some people.
The other alternative is painful to contemplate, and that is the new recruiting coordinators can’t recruit.

2021 Sophomores are the new fifth year seniors., they likely have been through four training camps and seasons, 2018 2019,2020,and 2021, so next year will be fifth year in program.
My point is that we don’t need to look to bring in upper classmen. A junior JC transfer is probably two years younger than a Junior in our the program. And just because someone has eligibility doesn’t mean they’ll be here longer than it takes to graduate. Gilliam and Perryman are just the first class of guys who will move on with eligibility, either to play elsewhere or to start post college life.

Since the postponed 20 season, they haven’t produced as much content about the football team on the official site. No position previews for example. They had hired a downsized Enterprise reporter to produce that stuff in ‘19 & ’20
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
The roster lists almost everyone in HS school classes of 19 and 20 as redshirt freshmen. So almost half of those “redshirt” players have been on campus for three years. Next year the class of 19 may be sophomores in terms of eligibility but seniors in terms of academic class. Many aren’t going to hang around and play for three more years.
There’s usually quite a lot of attrition when after three years players realize they aren’t playing.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
At least at some level this is a failure. While we didn’t offer that many, I suspect there is no strategy where you don’t want a few freshmen to accept a scholarship offer.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
It’s even weirder as we gave 2021 recruits almost no playing time. That may mean two failed years of recruiting. I know there are other possibilities, just voicing concern.
  • 2022 Football Recruiting
It’s weird this year that there is little or no promotion of signing day on the web site compared to years past.

Nixon appeared in four games. San Diego,Dixie. Weber and Eastern Washington but only two tackles for season.
I think he was coming off an injury in last game of spring season injury but can’t recall what it was.

Not anyone close to his impact among returning defensive linemen.

I think it’s 12, one grad student, Duncan, and eleven seniors on roster, but maybe not all had scholarships. Most did.

The huge first class has attrited to fewer than 10, with two now in the transfer portal.

  • Jordan Perryman to transfer
So after five years at 15 units a quarter someone has 225 units but still hasn’t exhausted his eligibility. He is now about 24 years old and doesn’t want to commit to several more years for graduate degree. What reward can he get for hanging around?
  • Jordan Perryman to transfer
Which can you do in a year? Surprise me.
  • Jordan Perryman to transfer
So we have something to offer the few students that earn a degree elsewhere or here in three years. Small pool to draw from.
If admissions are under the same rules as non athletes, it’s less likely that we can offer enrollment to someone for a couple of quarters that isn’t an academic waste of time. Unlike state colleges or out of state colleges, UCs don’t offer second batchelors degrees, vocational certificates or anything else to hang on the wall after a couple of quarters of work. Except a teaching credential or what?
  • Jordan Perryman to transfer
There is a limit to how many undergraduate units are permitted.
Here is how it was historically:
If the student has graduated, they can’t enroll for a second Batchelor degree, that’s not permitted at UCs, State colleges it’s ok.
  • Jordan Perryman to transfer
How many graduate programs do we have that can offer someone a useful credential in a year?
Probably not many aside from a teaching credential, but I don’t know.
I don’t think there is much of an incentive for someone to play another year after being here for 4 or 5 already.

Our schedule wasn’t that light, Tulsa ended up 6-6, San Diego 7-4. Except for Dixie a respectable out of conference slate. Our conference schedule included 3 of the 5 playoff teams, and Weber would likely have been in the playoffs instead of us if we hadn’t beaten them.

The thing that was light was our list of wins against the playoff level teams. We had the opportunity but couldn’t do it, and mostly looked like we weren’t competitive. We don’t match the physicality of playoff teams.

We’re going to miss Bryce Rodgers next year and we obviously had trouble when we played without Lamson, with the CalPoly’s little Elija Ponder looking like an unstoppable force running around our 6’8” replacement at tackle. That illustrates that our young linemen may not ready to step in.
