Defense is successful in getting turnovers, but gives up too many yards per play.
Goal the coaches talk about is being disruptive and making the other team execute well consistently to get a score. But thats only half of it. The part that’s missing is limiting how many yards you give up per play.
We thought last spring that we would have Trimble and Bland but they’re out. We’ve probably got enough linebackers to get the job done but with the exception of Anesi they’re all pretty light. We have a couple of guys who were recruited as DBs in the mix outside linebacker and a couple of JC guys who seem to be walkons in the mix at middle linebacker. We’ve moved Jamison to defensive line and Anesi to rush. Maybe Anesi should move back to the middle and Jamison as a Rush linebacker, so we’re playing more experienced guys at linebacker. Just a thought.

Teams are going to run on us all year.

    Ugh! Bermudagrass
should be sprayed with roundup on sight. Since I unfortunately own some, Obnoxious Devils grass..

Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. As we all know, the depth chart doesn’t mean who’s playing, just Hawkins tool to motivate or acknowledge some players. But I think it’s meaningful that of all the new receivers Ornelas is the guy.
I’m really happy that Harrell and Vaughan are healthy and on our team, thanks Coach Gould. Funny that wide receiver is the position where his recruits still have leading roles.
  • Week 2: UC Davis @ San Diego
Orlando Ornelas, a true freshman,is listed in the depth chart at Harrell’s position. He must have looked very good in camp. Has run an 10.99 second 100 in track. Was QB his senior year and the first commit we had in 2019 class.
  • Aggies vs Bears
On the radio they seemed to think that guys just had cramps. For what it’s worth.
  • Aggies vs Bears
I’m wondering why Anesi would move to the “rush” linebacker, with Bland being ineligible it leaves us thinner at inside linebacker. It seems we have a lot of inexperience and not much size at inside linebacker.
I suspect Brandon Jamison status fits into this question; he was a “rush” linebacker last fall. This year he is listed as a defensive end but not on the depth chart. With all of our linebacker injury and eligibility problems we moved one linebacker to tight end, and another to defensive line.
  • Aggies vs Bears
What’s Brandon Jamison’s status? Injured? He did not participate in the Cal game according to stats.
  • Aggies vs Bears
They are so much better on yard per rush and yards per pass, that it offset their otherwise poor play.
  • Prediction time!
Kind of scary that two of those four JC linebackers, who seem to be walk-ons, are the backups listed for our middle linebacker. If the depth chart means anything, which it may not, in two linebacker positions we have only one out of five players listed that have ever played the position in a game for us.
  • Prediction time!
Speaking of redshirt freshmen, we have one position where the depth chart only lists two redshirt freshmen Strong side linebacker.
    Nick EATON or Da’Von FRAZIER
While the somewhat weird linebacker preview says “In transitioning from defensive back to linebacker, Da'Von Frazier made huge gains in the weight room under the watch of strength coach Jeff Bourque. “ , his roster weight is still 185
I don’t know what to make of that.
  • Prediction time!
If we think we’re good enough to be a championship contender we should expect that we’ll either win one of the two games we’re underdogs in or run the table in the games we’re favored in.
I’m hoping we pull off an upset of either Cal or NDSU to give us some cushion so we don’t have to run the table against the rest. We’ll have to see whether NDSU still looks unbeatable after all their changes.
I’ll predict we lose to Cal and NDSU and beat the rest. That assumes our defense doesn’t fall off, due to loss of Bland and the others. Linebackers will be key due to our losing so many contributors there.
  • Coaches Show
The article on the athletic dept. site seemed to imply the Sudwerk launch was today and coaches show on the 29th at it’s normal location the thread connecting them being beer at both. Did anyone hear Aggie coaches? I listened to the Cal coach on Aggie overtime podcast but that wasn’t our coach’s show.
  • Aggies vs Bears
So it’s confirmed Bland is not eligible.

    https://mavensports.io/cal/news/cal-football-uc-davis-to-visit-berkeley-without-ineligible-star-linebacker-MQ3GcIYfjEi7SjDdmFFQig/

Linebacker Montell Bland, who earned FCS freshman All-America honors last season, won’t be in uniform for UC Davis when the Aggies visit Cal in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.

Bland is not listed on the Aggies’ depth chart and an athletic department spokesman confirmed — with no other details — that he is not eligible to play at Cal.

Bland is the team’s top returning tackler with 78, a total that includes 7.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He had three quarterback hurries and recovered a fumble.

East Hall was on the east side of the quad, across the street from the patio the Coffe House moved to. It was set back a bit with two similar buildings fronting the street. Wood shingled sideing

Reminds me that I saw Phil Ochs sing “Here’s to the State of Mississippi” at the old coffeehouse in East Hall. The end of the 60s was hard on Phil. He went from Carnegie Hall to the Coffee House.

Oh No! . Frisco is in Texas
But maybe we should boycott the championship game anyway because of the name of the town.
  • Prediction time!
Note that Cal is playing North Texas in two weeks.
