  • Looking Forward to 2019
I guess scheduled game definition includes playoff games.... not very equitable to allow championship game participants to redshirt players who play in five games and everyone else gets four. Do teams get to round up? Is 5/13 a third?

If a goal is to get bigger on the d line that isn’t reflected in this year’s recruits. Maybe that’s not a goal, as not only did we not recruit any defensive tackle nose guard types, we apparently didn’t offer any.

It is interesting to see Hawkins making a commitment to running the ball. We had a lot of success with that in spots last year, kind of unnoticed with the big passing numbers. Two out of the three new TEs are 240-250 and seem to have good mobility in the clips, plus the new sizeable receivers could be good blockers. Last year we had such success with offensive line recruiting that I expect we’ll see more from some of the 2018 freshmen pushing for jobs; we had a guy offered scholarships at Fresno and Airforce who didn’t get on the field for example. . We lose only one offensive lineman, and have one who missed most of last year returning. With two freshmen and two sophomores in our starting O line last year, those guys are going to be better, stronger and probably bigger next year. We are going to be tough to stop.
I notice none of our NLI signers are listed under six feet. Several of the DBs are linebacker size. Looks like they went after athletes.
Again this year we recruited only highly mobile QBs all about 6ft, our next QB whoever he is is likely to be a mobile guy.

Given the youth of our offensive line and their already considerable size, its likely they'll add a even more weight. I don't know how much height is a factor for the offensive line but that's where Northern Iowa stood out., Plus we've added some big tight ends.
I'm not sure we are in a process of getting bigger on the defensive line, unless Suani warrants playing time, Were not adding many big bodies on the defensive line, and were going to lose a few next year.

Regarding your comment that getting three stars helps convince other prospects that the program is on the rise, 7 three stars should provide pretty good optics. Disregarding whether needs were filled, I think we have the best recruiting class in the big sky.
Should we let the sports information department know that today is winter, even in California?

And UCD is a higher ranked team than OSU with a chance at remaining that way. But these 3 star rankings must not mean much if a 3 star can’t get a scholarship to Oregon State

True, but remember last year Jake Parks signed late. It’s not a matter of numbers. Hawkins indicates a few weeks back that it might be three or four.

Barbato has great credentials for a walk-on. Probably would be a linebacker since he’s 200lb
Led state in sacks; 55 catches and 107 tackles. Plays basketball too.

interesting that if we go by the list of guys we’ve offered that you maintain on first page of this discussion that Dawson Hursts the first we’ve lost to Cal Poly. If that’s true then we really don’t compete much with them for recruits.

Transfer credit is well defined coming from a JC, the more academic programs have a numbering system that maps to UC equivalents. There are a lot of classes for which one would get credit transferable to a state college but none to a UC. Conversely, there is no list that says these CSU courses map to these UC they would be evaluated individually.
There are entire majors at state colleges that have no uc equivalents. Not necessarily a bad thing but not equivalent so no credit. Or even if they got credit might not fulfill major prerequisites.

  • Bruce Edwards Says Ags Will Go FBS in 5-10 Years
Just talking about publicity and support, I’m not sure that if we went FBS and were ranked somewhere around 30 and didn’t win our conference that we’d get as much or more press as winning an FCS national championship, or contending for multiple years.

It would not be easy for us to be a consistent top 30 FBS team, like Boise. If we went FBS we’d likely be more like San Diego State than Boise and that’s being optimistic. I’m not sure we’d get the coverage that San Diego State gets in their local market.

If we can get publicity at the lower level then the same doors would be open.
Winning is the thing that people want to be associated with, not an affiliation. The FCS/FBS thing is overrated; the distinction isn’t binary. There is a gradient of football teams. We have no chance of being a dominant team at the FBS level in the foreseeable future. Why become an FBS afterthought when we can be an FCS contender?
