No commentators? Amazing how little I miss them.

Too early for me out here in Hawai`i. I see that the Ags have an 8 point lead with 3 minutes left, so I'll watch and see if they can old on.

I hate to say that Montana's victory in the first round justifies their selection, so I won't. Rather, I think that if UC Davis had been in the slot, we'd be on to the next round.

In some cases, Les can use his depth to wear out an opponent that tends to use only 6-8 players. This seemed to work against Sac State. Milwaukee, however had excellent depth as well, although for this game, they only used 7 players very much. In fact, two of their starters only played for a combined 12 minutes, which is unusual. It is often the case, where some players are simply better coming off the bench. This is where a lot of substitution strategy becomes critical in seeing very quickly how certain matchups work, some players are not having a good game or others are really effective. T Y Johnson had the best game of his career, but no one on the Aggie bench really caught fire, so Les played his starters more than usual. Thus the UCD bench was outscored by the Panthers "bench" 59-13. On the other side, Angelo Stuart, one of the two starters I mentioned above, was not having a good game in his coaches opinion, even though he is one of the teams leading scorers.
  • Ezra Manjon Debuts with Vanderbilt vs Memphis Tonight at 5 p.m. 11/7
I see that Ezra leads the Commodores in assists and minutes played but also averages 6.2 points and 4.2 rebounds. Vanderbilt is 3-3.
  • MBB: UC Davis (0-0, 0-0) vs. Cal (0-0, 0-0) Mon. Nov. 7, 8 PM @ Berkeley
Cal is now 0-7, all but one of the losses at home, which I think is the worst start in their history.

#12, Kentrell Pullian wrecked us. He got 9 rebounds, 6 on the offensive glass and lead the Panthers with 20 points. He didn't even start. I have to give credit to Milwaukee. They didn't falter after starting off poorly, did not panic when they lost the lead with 9 seconds to go and matched us in almost every category, actually trailing in rebounds 31-37. Statistically, the key was that they made 10 of 16 from 3 for 62% while the Ags shot a relatively cold 7 for 23. We should not overlook the fact that this was their home floor and our guys had to go on a very long trip to get there. My daughter lives in Milwaukee, so I know something about that flight.

I don't know that I've ever seen a more heart-breaking loss. One thing to lose at the buzzer, another thing to lose that way after outscoring the opponent 9-2 in 30 seconds. I guess Christian was trying to throw it as far away as he could, but yeah...
  • MBB: UC Davis (4-1) at Milwaukee (2-3) Sat. Nov. 26, 2 pm
Ags have taken 17 threes. Problem is they've only hit 5. And 10/17 from the foul line.

I don't see any real bias by the refs, but I still don't like it when they call it so close. It not only interrupts the flow of the game, but it inflates the number of foul shots, which should not be (but often is, I know) the decisive factor is a game.

I wonder if Pepper is 100%? He doesn't seem injured, but we're sure missing his scoring.
  • MBB: UC Davis (4-1) at Milwaukee (2-3) Sat. Nov. 26, 2 pm
I noticed that the Panthers non-starters have scored all but 11 of their points. As for the Aggies, all but 6 of their points are from the starters. T Y Johnson is having a really good game. He's shooting 100% (6 of 6), but it seems like Pepper is not looking for his shot. He's only 1 of 2 from 3.

Their announcer has said that Milwaukee has done a good job of forcing turnovers, but I saw at least 4 that were the result of sloppy or careless passing. I also thought the Aggies were forcing too many shots on drives as opposed to settling for a mid-range jumper. The one stat that strikes me is the 27.3% shooting from the 3 point arc.

Officials calling this close, lots of fouls and traveling calls.
  • MBB: UC Davis (4-1) at Milwaukee (2-3) Sat. Nov. 26, 2 pm
I see that ESPN's analytics give UC Davis only a 28.7% chance of beating the Panthers.

  • MBB: Sac State (3-1) at UC Davis (3-1) Tues. Nov. 22, 7:30 PM
Oddly enough the series has been a bunch of runs where one school dominates the other. UCD won 6 of the first 8 games, then in 1951, Sac State went on a 31-5 tear until 1965, just before Bob Hamilton became the head coach. Then the Aggies more or less dominated winning 26 of 42 until 1987. From then until 2015, it was again the Hornets turn going 16-9. Since 2015, it's been pretty even, but that long 31-5 stretch explains why CSU Sacramento still has an edge. (Source, UCD Men's Basketball Record Book)

Yikes, I need to stop relying on ESPN for everything. On their site, it looks like the Ags are home against SEMS and Boston. I just checked the UCD website and they even have the latter two games "at" UCD. I suppose that's because the Cream City Classic designates us as the home team. How did you find this out? When I googled "Cream City Classic" I got a baseball tournament in April and a swimming race.
