  • Post-Season for the Big West
Right. I don't know why I didn't realize this, but the Honolulu paper noted this morning that if Hawai`i loses to CSUN on Saturday and Cal Poly beats the Beach (both likely) then we wold wind up playing Cal Poly. That could be a bigger problem for the Ags than Hawai`i.

    Games of Mar. 6

    Cal Poly (home 13-18/7-12) 100, CSU Fullerton (6-25/1-18) 69
UC San Diego (home 27-4/17-2) 70, Long Beach State (7-24/3-16) 63
    CSU Bakersfield (home, 14-18/7-11) 76, Hawai`i (15-15/7-12) 64
    CSUN (home, 20-8/12-5) 94, UC Riverside (home, 19-11/12-6) 79

Some blow-out games today, notably the one that took place in northern California and one upset that puts the 3-4 seeds in doubt. The other “upset” is Hawai`i loss to CSU Bakersfield, which is not huge, but seals the 6th seed for UC Davis, and put the Warriors in jeopardy of falling into 9th.

Ags outscoring UCI in the second half, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Irvine is going to win this one.

    Yes, whether we're 6th or 7th, they'll probably be 7th or 6th, so most likely we'll play Hawai`i again.

It looks like the Ags are demoralized, not playing with a whole lot of energy or focus, which does not bode well for Saturday.

Well, they're off to a fairly miserable start. More turnovers than field goals in the first 4:32 and down 10-2. Not much of a crowd either.

Yes, the lowest they can go is 7th, but that is unlikely. They would have to lose both games this weekend (probable) and Hawai`i would have to sweep Bakersfield and CSUN (very improbable). If that happens I think Hawai`i wins the tiebreaker.
  • Post-Season for the Big West
I can't remember where the Big West Tournament games were broadcast in the past. I want to say the finals were on ESPNU, but were earlier rounds only on ESPN+ and does anyone know if it will be the same this year?

It is said that it's hard to beat the same team 3 times in a season, but I take that adage with a grain of salt. If one team has beaten the other twice already it is either because they are just far better or they have some kind of matchup advantage. I very much doubt that Bakersfield is better player for player than the Ags, so they bring something to the game that the Ags don't seem to be able to handle, such as their extremely physical play. I still like the Hawai`i matchup better because the Ags offense was terrible last week so I believe they can do better on a neutral court.

Tomorrow, we should hope that Hawai`i can beat Bakersfield away from Honolulu. That would clich the 8n seed for the Warriors but of more importance, it would likely knock the Roadrunners out of the playoffs as Cal Poly will probably edge them out of the 8th seed. I think we have a better chance in the 6-7 matchup with Hawai`i than Bakersfield.

I remember being impressed with most of the broadcasters but appalled with the Bakersfield guys.
  • Ags vs Tritons on ESPN2
I think Rocak's bachelor's degree is in Chemistry--not the easiest major--and he's a grad student in the MBA program. Those two degrees are a really smart combination nowadays with so many high tech industries in California looking for sharp scientific minds who also understand business management especially with the quality of education that UC Davis provides.
  • Post-Season for the Big West
There are "only" 16 and teams like Texas and Oklahoma who are in 13th and 14th places are supposedly NCAA worthy. 8 SEC teams are in the top 25.
  • Post-Season for the Big West
I counted 14 SEC teams in the bracketology I saw. At this rate they're going to have to call it the SEC invitational.
  • Post-Season for the Big West
AP now gives UC San Diego 17 votes and the Coach's poll, 24. Both would give them a rank of 30 if the polls didn't stop at 25. Bracketology on ESPN gives them an 11 seed. I'm going to say that the Big West gets two bids if anyone knocks off the Tritons in the BW Tournament.
  • Wow - that UCSB @ CSUN game
I tried to find the replay on ESPN+ but I didn't see it anywhere. Did they take it down?

I was replaying the end of the game and noticed myself and my brother in law right behind the Aggie bench in my UC Davis hoodie. Did anyone who saw it catch the names of the Hawai`i commentators?

It was tough to read the Honolulu newspaper crowing about how Hawai`i had beaten a good UC Davis team by feeding their big men and how TY had missed all five of his last shots in a "please, please, please" effort to stage a comeback. It seemed to me like the team lost it's composure, not so much panicking but not playing with discipline for much of the second half. After one particularly tough sequence mid-way through the second half Leo came back to the bench yelling and punching his chair. He was clearly angry with the way he was playing and it is true that he missed a lot of shots (0 for 6), but he wasn't the only one. The only one who had a decent game on offense was Pablo Tamba. On the other hand, the team did all it could on defense against a sometimes huge Hawai`i front line. It's a mystery to me that the Warriors are 7-11.

I was sitting right behind the Aggie bench and the team's frustration was very evident, from Coach Les on down. If not for Hawaii's 13 turnovers, including 10 steals by UH to go along with 4 blocked shots, this would have ben an embarrassing loss. I looked at the box score when I got home which verified my game time impressions. We got 61 field goal attempts, 12 more than Hawai'i and clanked 13 of those from the 3 point line, while the Warriors were hitting 39% of their treys. Each 3-pt. make, the Hawai`i crowd enthusiastically erupted, despite the fact that the arena was very empty, partly due to a baseball game going on at the same time and partly due to the B-ball teams losing record.
