Great article, Colter, and an interesting take on the power rankings. Appreciate your work!
  • Comstock article on Ryan Sypkens
Good for Ryan. Sounds like he's found his calling and is doing well. The mental part of athletics is huge. I also struggled with the fear of failure as a young athlete many years ago. Of course, many of the "old school" coaches used harsh criticism and intimidation back then which only made things worse.

  • Any Given Saturday (Biggest FCS Message Board): "Is UC Davis Back?
Well the thread over at AGS is still going but it got highjacked big time when a Sam Houston State fan started posting trash about the Big Sky.

Anyway, there is a Big Sky predictions thread every week and so far this week everyone is picking Weber over the Ags by 8-18 points. There will be a lot more predictions coming.

If you like to make predictions, here's the thread: http://www.anygivensaturday.com/showthread.php?196181-Big-Sky-Predictions-9-23
  • We're Finally Getting A Weekly Coaches Show!
Did anyone tune into the coaches show last night?

I caught a few minutes of it. The location was moved from Woodstock's Pizza to the Westlake Village Clubhouse. The audio was better because it was quieter without a lot of people talking in the background but it seemed like there were only a few fans in attendance. It was like they were talking to an empty room.

Scott Marsh interviewed Ryan Parenteau and Justin Williams. They were both great examples of the best of Aggie athletes...smart, articulate, humble and excited to be a part the new era under Hawkins.

I didn't hear the last part where Hawk was going to talk about the Weber State game.
  • Week 4: UC Davis @ Weber State
There's a part of me that is starting to believe again but it's as if I have PTSD and I'm almost afraid to get my hopes up. I'm happy with what I'm seeing and hearing but I'm keeping a low profile and taking it a game at a time.
  • Any Given Saturday (Biggest FCS Message Board): "Is UC Davis Back?
Nice post over on AGS forum, SochorField.

I'll probably chime in over there also. I used to post somewhat regularly on AGS but, as we continued our downward slide in FCS football, I faded away; there just wasn't anything positive to post about. It's a great forum for the most part though and has lot of long time members who are very knowledgeable about FCS football.

NDSU has a good number of fans on the AGS forum who remember the great rivalry we had with the Bison in our D2 glory days. We travel to the Fargodome in 2019 so, hopefully, we'll be able to play a competitive game with them by then. We've got a long way to go but it would be awesome if we continued to improve to the point that the rivalry with the Bison could be rekindled.
  • Big Sky?
You nailed it, Aggie08. Totally agree that the BW is the best fit for us for the majority of our sports including basketball.

Very awkward...I think Hawk must be burning the candle at both ends prepping for Weber State and lost his train of thought!
  • Week 4: UC Davis @ Weber State
I watched part of their game at Sac. When I first turned it on Weber was up 16-0 midway through the first quarter. I thought it was going to be a blowout but Sac rallied and pulled within 3 in the second half before giving up a final TD.

Neither team looked all that impressive to me but Weber went toe to toe with Cal so we know they have talent. They looked a bit flat against the Hornets and Sac gained confidence at the game went on. I think this is a winnable game for the Ags but we know all to well that the games are won on the field of play.
  • 2018 Recruiting List
Glowing article about QB commit Carson Baker:

Excerpt: "Prior to this season Carson visited UC Davis and ended his recruiting process committing to the University describing the school as a perfect fit. “They have always been my number 1. After the visit, I knew it was a great fit for me. Coach Plough throws the ball a ton and I have a great chance to come play early. Also, they have a whole new coaching staff with Dan Hawkins who coached in big time programs like Colorado and Boise State. Off the field, the education is amongst the best in the world,” says Carson."

  • Post game discussion: UC Davis @ Portland St
I think Hawkins is all in for the long haul here. Remember, he often says, "UCD football was my baptism in excellence," and at his presser he said, "this is the right place, the right time, the right fit."

Hawk has been to the pinnacle at Boise State only to see the bottom fall out at Colorado. He brings a ton of experience and wisdom to Davis and he's certainly seen bigger paychecks than we could offer him.

He understands and embraces the the philosophy of Aggie Athletics. He is surrounded by former friends and coaching colleagues both on his staff and in the community. He has a chance to create something very special here and, in doing so, he can follow in the footsteps of the great coaches that influenced him so much as a young man.

Like he said in the legacy video, "the goal is to help create better students, better men, better football players and, ultimately having them going out into society and help create a better world."

I truly believe that he is grateful to have come full circle and return back home to Davis and, at this stage of his career and life, he's in it to give something back and to pay it forward.
  • Week 3: UC Davis @ Portland State
Great video...Hawk's got this team believing...
  • Highlighting our Academics
It's really good to see this and, like you said, this should be standard format for all recaps for every sport. Great academics and true student/athletes is an integral part of Aggie Pride and is a great recruiting tool also.
