  • MBB UC Davis (12-8, 5-4) at Cal State Northridge (11-10, 4-5) Thursday Jan. 29, 3 pm, on ESPN+
Starting out as a shoot-out. 20-13, UCD after only 5 minutes. At this rate, the Ags will easily hit triple digits.

Hawai`i travels to Irvine today. A win puts the Anteaters in the driver's seat.
  • MBB UC Riverside (7-13, 2-6) at UC Davis (11-8, 4-4), Saturday Jan. 24, 2 pm, on ESPN+
Were you guys able to see some of those foul calls or missed calls on replay in the arena? Both Scott Marsh and Sandy Simpson pointed out a few of them.
  • Big West Updates
The standings after this weekend show that the middle of the Big West remains a 7 team pack separated by only 3 games. For UCD the problem is to climb over at least UCSD to grab a fourth seed. Trouble is they have already lost a game to the Tritons and have to play them again in SoCal along with six other road games.

One point that needs noting is the quality of officiating in this game. I thought it was pretty poor. The refs missed a few and made a few "phantom" calls as well. Those who were at the game might have noticed it too, but on TV, the replays made the errors very apparent.

It was the spring of 1968. I don't remember seeing John Frost get hit, but I can believe it. I think that was also the game that Aggie fans outnumbered Hornet fans by 3:1. One of the guards for Sac State was a guy I went to high school with, Bill Steinmetz.

Too close for comfort. It's beginning to look like opposing coaches are trying to be physical with our guards to take advantage of their relatively small size. Their #10, worthy, was getting easy layups against Sevilla, but then he stopped. I think it was because Niko Rocak was shading his man to the left to help out with Worthy who has 4 inches and 40 pounds over Conner. Too bad they didn't use that against UCSD.

It was nice to hear Scott mention Gordon Baranco who was the Ags point guard when I was an undergrad. I still remember a tight game at Sac State when the Hornets were fouling to try to cut into our slim lead. Coach Hamilton kept the ball in Gordie's hands and they kept fouling him and he kept making the free throws. Aggies won, 73-67

Hope the Aggies don't have second half let down. They showed some signs of it near the end of tghe first half, giving up an 8 point run by UCR and missing a lot of shots. At the half, they have tgwice as many assists, 3 fewer turnovers and 5 more rebounds than the Highlanders

Good start. The Highlanders don't seem to be very disciplined on defense.

In all three of those games the Ags led at the half or shortly after the half by 7 to 10 points and lost. In two of those games they had defensive let downs. Versus Cal Poly they allowed 30 in the first half and 54 in the second. Versus the Tritons it was even worse, 25 and 55. Bakersfield was slightly different in that they had a guy who scores less than 10 per game go off for 35. Sightly different because they never were able to defend him even after the half. Note, too that against Fullerton we won, but gave up 45 in the latter half as opposed to allowing only 24 in the first. In all four cases the question is why? We saw them play very good defense against both UCSB and UCI. It's up to Coach Les to figure this out.

It's strange how inconsistent this team has been: beating one of the best teams in the conference and losing to the worst; playing so well against the Anteaters then playing so poorly against the Tritons. It's enough to turn a coach's hair white.
  • MBB UC San Diego (14-5, 4-3) at UC Davis (11-7, 4-3), Thursday Jan. 22, 6 pm, on ESPN+
As soon as Chaikin, #10, came out and hit his first 3, I said Uh-oh, we're gonna lose this one.

Thanks. That's what I get for the copy and paste process.

Yes, it was clear that the D broke down in the second half. Disappointing after that great effort against UCI. But the offense was also inconsistent, shooting only 36% and with Cooper and Sevilla, the Ags two leading scorers, combining for only 15 points.

So much for the Tahoe Blue Unis bringing good luck.
  • MBB UC San Diego (14-5, 4-3) at UC Davis (11-7, 4-3), Thursday Jan. 22, 6 pm, on ESPN+
ESPN finally has stats up. What is striking is that San Diego has big advantage in rebounds: 33-22. Ags have a slight advantage in turnovers: 15-10. Score is tied at 45.
  • MBB UC San Diego (14-5, 4-3) at UC Davis (11-7, 4-3), Thursday Jan. 22, 6 pm, on ESPN+
Sevilla hurt, but the Ags are getting some shots to fall to take a 30-25 lead. Hope they can keep it going.
  • MBB UC San Diego (14-5, 4-3) at UC Davis (11-7, 4-3), Thursday Jan. 22, 6 pm, on ESPN+
No stats available, but it's evident that neither team has found the range yet. Low scoring first half so far at 18-13 UCSD. Both Sevilla and Chapelle are scoreless for the Ags and Chaikin has not hit a 3 for the Tritons.
  • MBB UC San Diego (14-5, 4-3) at UC Davis (11-7, 4-3), Thursday Jan. 22, 6 pm, on ESPN+
I see that the spread opened at 2.5 but is now 1.5. If I were a gambler, I'd have taken the Ags at 2.5. I believe the consensus was that last season the Aggies lack of depth caused them to run out of gas the latter part of the season. They lost seven in a row as if we need to be reminded.

Yes, but it could have been even better. I just remember one stretch of three straight possessions late in the game when the team lost its focus, seemingly, a surrendered unforced turnovers on bad passes.
