I forgot to add to my list of mistakes two potential pick six drops. One in the first quarter that would have put us up 7-0, the other on their ‘Philly Special’ late 3rd that would have put them in a big hole. Both were there for the taking. Little things that keep the other team in the game

One positive was the ‘return’ of Castles. He’d been a little quiet lately, probably getting attention from the defense. We ran a couple nicely designed passes to him, one on a type of naked bootleg, that picked up big yards. Like to see similar plays to Harrell instead of focusing on passes to the sideline with him.

What nags at me about this game, and the last couple, add the little mistakes that keep us from developing momentum. Last night, lots of penalties, a couple bad ones that kept their drives alive. Several missed tackles that changed a 4th and long, into a first down or first and short. Fielding a punt on the one yard line, instead of taking the touchback - that one hurt because the running game was starting to wear them down and it looked like another scoring drive would seal the deal.

We really need to tighten that up. Not sure if our tackles will be back soon, but we could use them in pass protection. Hastings was very accurate, and didn’t make bad choices (although he gets a lot of balls batted down). I think 2-1 is the requirement and that’s not gonna be easy

During the broadcast they mentioned that Dixon was relaying plays even though he wasn’t suited. I think travel restrictions have eased

did they mention we were ranked #10?

I believe at least 2 OL were out this week which may have contributed to the lack of consistency. Defense was okay, but we can’t get any pressure on QB. We had a couple drives where they were 3rd and long, and defense made errors (not tackling QB, missed tackle on WR) that left them with short 4th downs that were converted. They scored a TD after the first, I think FG after second. Those are big plays.

Fake punt was enormous. So was failed onside kick.

Good time to have a bye. Regroup, get healthy and ready for the home stretch. I expect Hastings to start next game. Not sure how well he can get the ball down the field, especially in the edges. Hard to drive 80 yards when we don’t pass more than 5 yards or so.

San Jose State plays UNLV tonight at 8:00. Welcome to the glamour of Mountain West football.
  • Kevin Daft update
.I would imagine an Ivy pension is as generous as UC and it would be (like UC) driven by years of service.

Daft is a Sochor guy - he might be liking no spring ball, just like his mentor. Teevens is 65 and maybe getting close to retirement - Daft would be a logical successor.

expensive; glad I booked back in March. Rates have really shot up. We really like Avila Beach. Neat community. Promenade area was rebuilt after a diesel spill something like 30 years ago, so it’s very pristine while maintains an old seaside feel

i doubt it but they have the best chance

our schedule is easier than in recent years (avoiding both Montana’s) but that ISU made it harder than it needed to be.

I did a quick look one day, and it seemed like the traditional top teams had tougher slates than us.

MSU and EWU seem to have the toughest. MSU has Weber, EWU and Montana. EWU has Montana, Weber and MSU. Montana is like us with two ‘top teams’. Sac clearly easiest with only Montana.

We are planning on going ( hotel is booked) but may have to cancel due to some family conflicts. We’ll have to hit the road EARLY to get back for granddaughter birthday on Sunday. Still waiting bin word on something on Friday - that would scuttle it

i think Sac has been under the radar because of that loss to UNI. they had 450 yards BUT 3 INT that day. i believe 2 of UNI's 3Q TD's came on short drives after INT's.

NAU is a mystery. 3-3 with win over Arizona (winless but PAC12), but a loss to UNC. Other two wins are over lower level BSC teams. Two big OOC losses to good team. Scary at home

A few things on attendance: 1) I’m seeing large group of older students, which i’ve never seen before; 2) student section is lively and sticks to the end. I think that’s helped by all the giveaways and Darius Livingston on the sideline mic; 3) there were a TON of students walking back to the apartments across 113 - that’s new. Seems like most students in the past were frosh who left at the half.

Offense was again sluggish. HR underthrew a wide open receiver at about 15 yards on first drive and that seemed to effect his confidence. One INT was bad, other was a tip that DL barely got. Pressure was a concern even BEFORE the 3 OL went down.

UNC was very poorly coached. 5 procedure calls. TO after a kickoff. Bizarre third down calls. Down 25-0, they took almost 6 minutes off clock with slow drive (time of possession is helped by long huddles) and settled got a FG.

Defense was pretty stout. Their rush totals were pushed up by 4 or 5 big gains, at least 2 on that long FG drive. Stuffed then repeatedly on their full house package. Coverage was good. Rush not so good. Poly and a bye seems to be coming at the right time.

I guess Dotson left the team. They still seem to have running options. His usage for Hornets was very limited early on, and his numbers way down from the past
