what is the universe of games? Big sky conference games?

Here are the ratings of FCS and transitioning from FCS schools pulled from Sagarin. This is just based on point differentials, not won/loss. Illustrates some of our wins are so unimpressive that they decrease the rating. Last week Davis was ahead of Weber and Sac. Davis appears to be a middling team that narrowly pulled off an upset against Idaho. I don’t think that is accurate, I think if they played Idaho again they’d win.

The first thing you think of is the offensive line. They lost Povey, Ford and Parks. Ford and Parks each missed games last year and Davis returned guys who started in their place. Povey was on the roster for fall camp and then changed his mind, They brought in two transfers who are playing guard and are starting a redshirt freshman at center, who saw no action last year, They have last years starting tackles.

Plough says they were surprised when Portland played differently than under previous co-DCs, and they were stymied. Then they had the dominant 2nd quarter, before being stymied until they started the last drive in the third quarter. They seem slow to react to changes.
Poor field position is partly due to the defense giving up 11 yards per attempt. I wonder what percent of games are won when a team averages 10+ yards every pass attempt.

That looks conclusively a TD to me.

The Aggies had a hugely productive offense in terms if yards (548) and first downs (38j. After being shut out in the first quarter they put together three consecutive drives in the second quarter that covered a total of 213 yards, ending in two touchdowns and a touchdown negated by a penalty as time expired.
Defense allowed 11 yards per pass attempt. This was the first game since Cal that they played a good veteran QB.

Southern Utah lost in overtime.when they missed a PAT after matching Tarleton State's touchdown in overtime.
So many close games today.

The end of first.half.play that negated.a touchdown is in the coaches. 2nd game in a row where they had illegal procedure in a key plays. That is on the coaches.

if a player has both feet down in the endzone and catches the ball and then driven out with a tackle, does it matter if the ball crossed line?

The obviously are asked to do more shifts and formations than they know how to do.

How many times have we had the too many players on the line of scrimage or in the backfield?
I laughed when an opposing coach, pressed to come up with some praise for Davis in the Gould years came up with what I thought was faint praise that Davis always lined up correctly. I guess that is an accomplishment we should envy.

Flows from comparative scores. That is what results from every opponent scoring in the fourth quarter. Comparative score algorithm don’t rate Davis vey highly. Example is that Davis is rated fifth in the big sky by Sagarin.
I don’t think point spreads reflect much analysis but if they did they might reckon that Davis has given up a ton of yardage to inexperienced QBs and now they are facing a veteran.

i attended the first PSU vs Davis game in 1974. Davis scored 50. Davis didn’t win again until 2005.

Portland played at Chattanooga a half day after the field was underwater from the recent hurricane, something that would be impossible on grass.

Was there a public debate over the 105 scholarship change? Who votes?
This seems detrimental to the bulk of the teams, and anti-competitive. Don’t be surprised if the result is the bigger programs devote those 20 scholarships to raiding players from weaker conferences and FCS. The top schools will get to continue to snag most the 3 star and higher recruits and they’ll now have room to gather the ones they missed coming out of high school.

This series goes back fifty years exactly and Davis won that first game 50 to 21, so it.would.be fitting if they scored 50 again.

Portland State's offense is not too bad. They have a very large offensive line, everyone at the top of their depth chart over 320lbs. They have a running back who gained 100 yards against Chattanooga. Against Chattanooga they were able to score 30 points despite their opponent having the ball for 35 minutes.
And Davis hasn't shown an interest in winning big.
I think Davis wins handily but by a score that looks closer than the game, as they did in their last five wins, going back to the Causeway.

Purely from the point of view of point differential, Sagarin has Davis as the fifth best Big Sky team, and will play three higher rated teams, Montana State, Montana, and Sac. Davis doesn’t have to play two Big Sky teams that are in their top 20, Weber and Northern Arizona. There is no thought behind these ratings, they just reflect comparative scores. Davis’ low ranking stems from their failure to blow out some winless teams and the narrow margin of their win over Idaho,
