I agree. Les has had success building defensive minded, up-tempo teams that look to get out and run. I remember Bob Williams saying that Les is the best coach for developing guards on the west coast. Hopefully, TY will stay with the team and become the team leader and that Les will bring in some offensive talent to complement him. I think DeBruhl and Sevilla will see a lot more playing time also.
I think I read that student athletes have a 60 day window to decide on where they plan to transfer, but is that 60 days after they enter the portal or 60 days after the portal closes (May 1?)?
I’ve searched on that and can’t figure out the answer. I know for football, May 1 seemed to be the magic date that transfers were no longer allowed.
If I read things correct, may 1 was the deadline to ENTER the portal. You can actually transfer up to fall unless you declare inactive. Example : we signed Drew Carter last year in July.
For football, May 1 was the last day you could transfer - at least that was the message from Plough when he declared it Lan Larison day (he was officially staying).
Irvine's outstanding Fr PG, Derin Saran, is transferring to Stanford. Saran averaged 10.1 PPG and 19 minutes per game as a true freshman last season at Irvine.
Hey Aggie fans. I track the off season movements for all the BW schools. Just simple Google sheets; four tabs:
Tab 1: portal activity
Tab 2: all incoming players
Tab 3: 2024-25 roster
Tab 4: schedules
that’s what I’ve heard from someone I consider very reliable. Also, that Rocek has enrolled in a grad program and will be back. Not etched in stone, but I believe both will be back
I’m looking forward to seeing how he handles the pressure of it being His team next year. Yes, he’ll have help from others, but TY will set the tone both on offense and defense. Should be a very competitve team
Verbal Commits says we offered junior 6'2" PG CHRISTIAN GILLILAND out of Tennessee. He gets to the rim, appears to be ambidextrous, and can play above the rim.
With TY back, and assuming Nico back also, I think we have one more slot available (pepper and Ade and milling gone, Cooper and Chappel added). Maybe a shooter???
Per Verbal Commits, https://verbalcommits.com/players/jamal-unuakhalu, Aggies have signed 6'7" Jamal Unuakhalu from Moorpark college. Another big body interior player. While I certainly don't mind more size, this seems a little contradictory to Les' history. Don't know if this is a scholarship spot or a walk-on.
I think Jamaal Unuakhalu is a good recruit for the Aggies. Les does a great job of finding "diamonds-in-the-rough" who often get overlooked.
I just looked at Unuakhalu's stats for his freshman year at Moorpark and, overall, they're pretty impressive: 7.2 ppg, 56% shooting overall and 8.6 rebounds per game. He scored in double digits in 7 games (high of 18) and had double digit rebounds in in 13 games (high of 16). Considering he averaged just 21.3 minutes per game, those are pretty good stats.
In his sophomore season he averaged 31 minutes per game, 14.5 ppg while shooting 57% overall, 10.6 rebound per game along with 3 blocks per game. He scored in double digits in 23 games (high of 28) and had double digit rebounds in 18 games (high of 19). He also had a high of 8 blocks in a game twice. So he improved a lot.
Overall, he appears to have a big upside and a good foundation to improve and grow under Les. His rebounding stats are impressive and he shoots a high percentage. We know Les emphasizes defense so I would guess that he's a good defender as well. He can help fill in for the loss of Adebayo's defense and rebounding with more scoring as well.
I don't know if we have any scholarships left to give but, if we do, I think we might see another guard especially a good 3 point shooter.
