I had an obnoxious friend at the time, and I told him we would give Stanford a game. He rolled his eyes and lauded the Stanford coach. I went to the post game bash afterwards in Palo Alto.

I believe the AD didn't last long.

Davis was 0- 2 going into the Stanford game, but one of the losses was to a New Hampshire team that ended up ranked number 1 in 1AA for most of the last half of the season before losing to UNI in the quarterfinals. New Hampshire scored a touchdown in the final minute to win the game.

I was there! I don’t think many people realize how strong our defense was in that game. It was an unforgettable experience.

The run defense in that era for Davis was stupendous.
In 2005 NDSU gained 3 yards rusjing against Davis on 23 attempts.
The next year Montana State gained 2 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Another UNH note from 2005, Chip Kelly was the offensive coordinator there at the time. I think it was former Aggie Mike Bellotti who saw his offense as revolutionary and brought him to Oregon to run the wide open Ducks scheme we all know so well today.

2005 season was tough, that loss to Grand Valley State, that was tough, that was such a hard fought game, and scheduling the best DII program in the country at the time...who had just won a DII National Championship - interesting choice. Remember walking at the entry gate after the game as the players were walking back from Toomey into the locker room, the Grand Valley State guys were straight up barking and acting nuts, "They say we lost too many seniors. Raaaaah." Like they were legitimately kind of crazy mentally...but they played hard, and they beat us.

The loss to Grand Valley State at home was 2003. They were number 1 ranked D2 team, and Davis was still Div 2., but i don’t know if Davis was eligible in the polls.

Guys, Stanford was not the first Div1A aka FBS win, UOP was Div 1A, Davis beat them In 1978, the first year they divided division 1.

UOP also in 86 and that was a better team having just beat Minnesota.

I was being recruited by UOP and invited by them to the game. My coach contact wasn’t in the mood to talk to me after the game!

I remember going to a Sac-Joaquin Section championship game at UOP in mid-90’s for a Lincoln-Stockton HS game. Big stadium. Was rocking. I was 6 or 7 at the time and UOP was probably just discontinuing football.
