They added one more game for 2026: 11/21 Southern Utah at home. So that's 4. Only 8 spots to fill

Also 3 of them are FCS games… I thought they were going FBS or bust!

I agree completely that the CalExpo thing is a terrible idea. Its very possible that once football leaves campus, it will never be back. IMO the current Hornet Stadium is in about the best physical spot its ever going to be. They should raise funds for 3-5 years and rebuild it. Just do the damn thing right.

I'm not understanding the utter panic from Sac on this.....I mean, Davis isn't freaking out, nor anyone else in the Big Sky about the FCS disappearing in the next 2 years.
I've been saying this is a resume builder for Wood since the beginning- "See? I got an FCS program to FBS and a stadium built in record time".....even though this isn't even in the best interest of CSUS seeing as they are nowhere near ready to do this. The entire thing has been bizarre.

Oh my god, it's one thing if fans want to blame unfair reffing but this is big time loser behavior. Maybe... just maybe could it be that you put together one of the most disjointed undisciplined teams in the country after bringing in like 70 new players? Nah, couldn't be them.

It is interesting that he is basically calling out Wood though. Doesn't sound like a guy who is enjoying time at Sac.

Penalties are not new for Sac. As long as i can remember they shoot themselves in the foot. I think it started with Mattos.

Mattos also talked a lot of crap and the coaches would fill the bulletin boards in Hickey with Mattos' dumb statements. Putting up 50+ year after year still didn't shut him up.

Forgot all about that guy. I bet 99% people think Wood is the AD / Pres.

This guy has been pretty realistic about Sac State's FBS ambitions from the beginning, and I usually agree with his take. But I really doubt that going FBS would add value to a CSUS degree, particularly outside CA. For either a prospective student, or for a CSUS graduate. Especially in the short run.

I can see that SUCCESSFULLY going FBS - which means:

    • winning seasons year after year,
    • being competitive in bowl game appearances
    • seeing on TV an enthusiastic student body attending football and basketball games

would eventually raise Sac State's visibility and encourage out-of-state students to look at the school's academic programs. Especially those that are really good, like the jazz degree. But the out of state tuition would still discourage many from following through.

I think, right now, turning FBS for most schools means a Tuesday night game vs Kennesaw State with nobody watching. No high school senior is watching that back east aand saying 'that's the school for me'. I think our approach of slowly building to a MWC spot is the best possible scenario.

For comparison. I don't think a Fresno State degree is worth more with a MWC/P12 football team on campus- within CA. While a Cal Poly degree w/ FCS football is worth far more in CA.

I would actually argue FBS football may increase the value outside CA, merely because of name recognition.
  • SochorField

Very few people are showing up to Davis or Sac for FBS football on Tuesday or even Thursday night.

I think slowly and thoughtfully building for MWC football is the right way to go. And so far we've got every indication that this is the strategy.

Thank goodness for sound, responsible leadership.

They have to schedule 8 games over the next 10 months.

Its going to be really difficult to achieve this. Sac is big physically and a formidable opponent to schedule as a "fill-in" game. Also, nobody in the FCS is going to want to help them out right now. For FCS teams with open dates, they are for sure not the first choice when looking to schedule a game at the moment.

What happens if they end up with like 7 games?

yeah I would much rather build up facilities, put up year on year fcs playoff bids and then move to the MW and join all of those western schools and our other sports in the conference than join the CUSA, play on tuesday, get 2k fans and pay 10-zillion dollars in travel expenses to go see Kennesaw State. I can imagine Wood is not happy that Davis got picked by the MW and not them, but beyond the actual academic and funding aspect, Sac also did everything but publicly seem like they wanted the MW (Im looking at Wood's brother and the Sac12).

I agree that FBS name recognition may increase the value of a degree at sac state slightly, but you know what would do it even more? Elevating their academics. Sac is a decent school but is consistently ranked in bottom 3rd among CSUs (I was surprised how high all the So Cal CSUs were ranked). I know they will likely never surpass schools like cal poly, SDSU, SJSU, but sac should be in the 2nd tier at least. That is what dr wood should focus on. Elevating academics and making sac not a commuter school.

IMO, Orr was doing a good job and his biggest problem is Wood interjecting. I think history will ultimately remember Wood as Sac’s version of Katehi - an incompetent leader hired for the wrong reasons, who has demonstrated poor performance and judgement in a short period of time. Should the CSU trustees want any advice, my observation has been that providing a bad executive hire more time and a longer leash has a poor track record of achieving vindication.

I frankly don't understand how any Sac fans or alums are still on board with Wood. I mean, he's time and time again lied directly to their faces about his various pie in the sky promises and the fans keep saying "let's give him more time, next time he'll be telling the truth". Dude is going from con artist to cult leader with how much some of their fans are sipping the kool aid.
