Following another grind out win, this one over CSU Fullerton, Davis travels to the Islands to take on a resurgent University of Hawaii team, originally the conference preseason favorite. Marginally in 2nd place ahead of UC San Diego, the Aggies will need to dig deep at the toughest place for visitors in the Big West. A win keeps UCD in control of their own destiny, while a loss would drop Davis back into 3rd place, and all but cede the top two place to Irvine and San Diego.

Hawaii is led by Bailey Flavell (13.2), with Saniyah Reversion and Kelara Curtis adding 9 points each. Imani Perez tops the Wahine on the boards with 6 a game, followed by Neverson with 5. Hawaii scores 63 ppg and is tough defensively, only conceding only 58 ppg. The Wahine may have extra motivation to upend the Ags…looking for payback after a 21-2 Aggie run over the final five minutes gave UCD a comeback W in both team’s Big West opener in December.

Ryann Bennett at 15.8 ppg continues to pace UCD in scoring, with Nya Epps (12.8), Megan Norris (12.5), and Avery Sussex (11.5) providing support. Norris also paces the Aggies in rebounding at 13.2 rpg, leading Big West, while Tegan Young and Nya Epps each add 4+ boards a game. The Aggies put up 70 points a game, and hold opponents to 64. Davis will need to be on their game in Honolulu, and not expect Hawaii to gift them with 25 turnovers as the Wahine did in the earlier game.

Ags trail 30-20 at the half plagued by cold shooting...including only 2 of 13 from 3.

Wouldn't mind not ever playing in HI again, except that they'll be a Mountain West opponent going forward now. *sigh

Hawai'i simply manhandled, or should I say "womanhandled," the Ags last night. They were the more physical and aggressive team with superior height also. It didn't help that the Ags were ice cold shooting for most of the first half either. The Ags only scored 9 points in the first quarter and all 9 points were scored by Nya Epps...that was a bad omen from the get go...

We've struggled all year against physical, aggressive teams. Actually, the Aggie WBB seems to struggle with physicality from opponents almost every year - some years more than others. Gross seems to prefer players who are more finesse style players, which may be more suited to the Princeton offense.

Defensively, it seems from the stands that the staff emphasizes positioning, helping, and not making stupid fouls - all of which is good. And especially when you have a short, inexperienced bench, like this season. Can't afford to have starters sitting extra time because of fouls. But the flip side is that our players aren't practicing against physicality, so they aren't used to it.

Can't argue with her track record, but it might help to have 1 - 2 players who relish contact and play through it. I was hoping that Tegan Young might be that player this year.

Hawaii taketh away, UC Santa Barbara giveth back.

Gauchos beat Irvine today. That means UCD now controls their own destiny for the 2 seed since we have the tiebreaker over Irvine if we finish tied. UCSD also still plays Fullerton and UCSB so they could still lose. We'd get the 1 seed in the event of a 3 way tie.
