In a lot of cases yes. The polls generally suck and should be taken with a grain of salt, especially early in the season.

Happens in FBS too. This week No.1 Ohio St went on the road, lost by 1 point at No. 4 Texas and dropped 5 spots. They fell behind Texas (fine) and four teams who either played mid tier FBS Group of 5 teams or FCS teams. Because beating the crap out of some overmatched team is somehow better than playing an actual good team.

I took it to mean overall as a program rather than that they've never been good. They had a really good 3 seasons (could have been 4 but Covid) with Taylor and that's literally it. They made 1 appearance in the DII playoffs and 4 in the FCS (3 with Taylor, 1 the year after he left). Made the QF once, never made the semis.

I guess it comes down to how you define top program. They got top-8 seeds so that's obviously a pretty successful stretch. But there's no sustained success or even intermittent success every few years.

The issue with this replay is one of the issues I have with replay overall. We should be using it to change obvious errors. Was there still a fraction of a second left on the clock? Maybe, maybe not. But even if there was, that's not an obvious error. And obvious error would be the ball clearly hit the ground with 2 seconds left and the clock operator screwed up.

Too often, we spend 2-4 minutes scouring replays to find something. That's not obvious. I don't know how long this replay took, but in general, if you can't figure it out withing 60 seconds, it's not a clear mistake, and the call should stand as is.

I mean, 2018 Jake Maier and 2024 Miles Hastings are at least in the conversation. Far from a football expert here so I'm not going to say they were better than Pinnick. And you can debate the talent around each player, their age, etc.

I'm well aware we're in the Mountain West, but I guarantee I'm going to go to the Big West website out of habit at least 4 times during the season when I want to look at where we rank in conference.

That's actually not that bad relative to some of their schedules. They're always pretty loaded.

In 2021, they played the teams that finished 4, 5, 6, 10. 14, 17 and 21 in the STATS poll.
In 2024, they played the teams that finished 2, 5, 13, 14, 21 and 22 in the STATs poll, plus a 11-3 UNLV team.

It used to be worse because they had fewer conference games and they'd really load up in the non-con.. But they tend to schedule a lot of Big Sky teams in the non-con, which makes sense. Since transitioning, they've played UCD, NAU, Idaho, Montana St, Montana, Sac St, Weber St.

Was hoping he would get in the game with the game not mattering to us and us heavily rotating the squad, even if it was just as a substitute.

At least the betting site I look at, UCSB is the third favorite to win the tournament, which seems weird considering they'd have to win 4 games in 4 days. For sure they'd have to beat the 3 seed and the 2 seed, and likely the 1 seed as well. Seems strange.

Alright, so beat Irvine and we can still get the double bye to the semifinals, which would be huge. Getting the 1 seed would be even better, but hopefully they can just beat Irvine tomorrow.

First tiebreaker is head to head. Then it’s best record against conference opponents starting at the top. So in a two way tie with Irvine, we split the season series. Then the next best team would be UCSD. We went 2-0 against them while Irvine went 1-1. If it’s a 3 way tie with UCI and UCSD, we went 3-1 against the other two, UCI went 2-2 and UCSD went 1-3.

So if we win both games this week (not a sure thing by any means) we’ll get at least the 2 seed.

Gauchos beat Irvine today. That means UCD now controls their own destiny for the 2 seed since we have the tiebreaker over Irvine if we finish tied. UCSD also still plays Fullerton and UCSB so they could still lose. We'd get the 1 seed in the event of a 3 way tie.

Getting a top-2 seed is the most important thing since you get the double-bye, but getting the 1 seed would be huge this year. Upsets happen, but there seems to be a clear top-3. So if you get the 1, you only have to beat 1 of the other 2 if you make the final. If you're the 2 or the 3, you'll likely have to beat both of the other good teams to make the tournament.

Bowl game sure. I was referring to playing for the conference championship within a couple years. They've done nothing outside of 4 Troy Taylor seasons in their history so why moving up to a harder league are they then going to compete for a conf championship right away? I mean, maybe they will. But I doubt it.
