  • U Center configuration / upgrades

The original Rec Hall configuration had the running track, and then tall wooden bleachers that folded together - maybe 6' wide and 25' or 30' tall? These wooden bleachers effectively created a wall between the running track, and athletic areas behind them - for badminton, volleyball, etc. Those bleachers were ocassionally used for rock concerts (Elton John, Pat Benatar), graduation, and Picnic Day. It seemed a more comfy venue with that setup and keeping the sound in. There also weren't huge gaps in the upper sections for Fire Exits - exits were the four corners each with multiple doors.

The current configuration has the upper stands pushed back against the exterior wall, letting the noise escape.

The remodel - with the new upper stands - also decreased seating in the upper areas, I believe partly to create additional, closer Fire Exits. The current gaps in the upper areas didn't exist before. It was just large banks of wooden bleachers. I don't know if the ASUCD Entertainment Council or whoever gave any feedback on how it would negatively impact the ability to book large acts (bands)

They could also selectively use the upper sections - one side opened for an overflow crowd, but the other closed (folded up) so we had a full arena feel. (Not lots of empty stands.)

Adding cutouts in the cement wall between the lower and mid-tier sections was a good enhancement.

I've never liked the huge gaps and reduced seating capacity. There had to be other options. I believe Aggie6thman (?) suggested a 'tunnel' configuration that served both purposes, retain 90% of the lost seats.

Supposedly the loss in seats also diminished (or eliminated) the ability to attract big concerts. (We've now lost the Pavilion (seating too limited), and Freeborn.)

I also lean towards preferring the upper bleachers that pulled inward when not in use, making a more intimate 3,000 - 3,500 bowl area and reflecting noise.

I believe Coach Gould was hammered one year, and eventually the scuttlebutt rumor was that we had a new head athletic trainer who had a hair trigger on holding back players. (Gould's motto was like the military, "Next man up".)

Given the new all-year training, another reason why I'm usually in favor of playing subs, and subs when we're comfortably ahead in the second half. We seemed to load up a lot of reps for HR, MH, LL, among others. MH was here five+ years, how much utility were in the last drive or two in blowout wins? I understand LL was battling for post-season honors and the NFL draft. Others would chime in, "If you don't have ONE QB, then you have no QB."

Has the extra year / two of wear and tear come into play? Are our SA doing different strength training in our new facilities? (My guess is no.)

What do you mean? Les didn't use Clint Bozner, and had a high player turnover rate before the Covid era. His career coaching record is .506.

Ham was gracious, warm, and funny off the court, and loved his players. His rantings weren't mean spirited or personal, he was a bundle of passion and intensity. I knew players who loved him, and most respected him. I witnessed many practices at Hickey and Rec Hall when he was both intense and funny.

He helped many get into grad school, and a lifelong friendship with Judge Gordie Baranco speaks volumes. I'm told the Hamiltons were there when Gordie was sworn in as one of the youngest judges ever in our state. He nurtured Audwin Thomas, Jason Rabedeaux, and many others. I've been told stories of Ham's kindness to players, and spending hours visiting with his players, sharing personal time. One former Ham assistant flew from back east to attend his memorial.

MSU cornerback Carr today: "And when they come to Bobcat Stadium, they're going to have to see us, for sure. I don't think that Cali weather that (they have), they don't see none of that at 8:15 in Bozeman, ooh wee.”

    CP young, WR crew younger.

My concern is the defense, depth there, and how much falloff going to backups. If we had Vargas we could run some ball control, not sure that we're ready to expose RB Kai Acai or frosh Aden Jackson (5'10", 210) to that vs MSU.

Any public venues showing it in Davis or the East Bay?

FWIW, next year's schedule looks favorable. EWU not being a monster helps.
