UCD was generally an above average team with a couple of great years in the Big West. Les should coach next year. UCD will increase the basketball budget as per rules of the Mountain West contract. (However, I can't confirm since I don't exactly recall the agreement . I do recall we have to schedule winnable home games. )

On the other hand, if our Massey rating is continually worse than the 150th best team in Division I while playing in the Mountain West, then I'd say his job may be in jeopardy.

I think we agreed to roughly double our basketball spending?

    Should we? Don't know.
    Will we? Yes.

Dude, this guy brings so much stability. Does anyone remember the Gary Stewart era!?

I don’t think people realize how bad it is to constantly change coaches. He could have jumped ship for a much bigger payday years ago. If anything, our vitriol should be focused on our marketing department not doing a better job of promoting us! And our merchandise for the most part sucks! Our license plate frames are hideous!!!!!!!!! How do we change that is my question.

I’d forgotten we played in the 2024 BWC finals. I’m hoping we bring in some new blood on the coaching staff to help recruit/retain players. Also hoping our GM Abatemarco can help with the transition.

To tag onto your post, Les is as close to an alumni type - very committed to UCD - as we're likely to get. He wants to be here. And Dr. Mike (I believe) recently pointed out in another thread how much he obviously cares about his players. As well as the stability Zythe mentioned, those are value-adders at a mid-major.

Les has his weaknesses, which several have pointed out. But I think John Madden had it correct - teams shouldn't let go of a coach unless they have a better guy already lined up. Moving on from Jim Les to search for a better guy isn't a wise move.

Don't change horses in the middle of a transition.

Major league eye roll here. I can’t see who we’d be in line to hire? But I’m in the camp that moving from the Big West is criminally stupid. But we know the answer: football. And we’ll dump our heritage at the same time by dumping our equestrian team.
