Aggies' 2025-26 edition meets Menlo College in the season opener. Last year, the Oaks gave UCD a surprisingly tough game with the Ags prevailing 80-70.

that whole conference of d2 teams that Menlo is in (pacwest) is surprisingly strong athletically.

Hope to make it for this game to see all the new faces. Tough stretch for me with football and 2 basketball games in a 5 day stretch

I'm really looking forward to seeing this team in action for the first time. It looks like we had a good recruiting year so I'm hopeful that we'll have a great season.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make to the game after all. I'll be watching on ESPN+ and am excited to see the new players we have. I hope Bob Williams will be commentating alongside Scott Marsh tonight. Bob is so knowledgeable and his comments really make the game more interesting. Go Ags!

Three new starters. Only Niko and Sevilla starting.

Niko already has two blocks. He's also showing more offensive aggressiveness so far. During an interview at halftime of a football game he did say he was going to focus on that.

Sevilla has really filled out. They are relentless on defense.

I'm curious how much the Mountain West announcement has helped in our recruiting in this year's team.

Offense has been ragged. Missing a ton of layups, and not great from the arc except Sevilla.

New color man is Tom Abatemarco who is our general manager and long time coach.

A pretty sloppy first half as might be expected for the first game of the season, with Aggies missing a lot of layups and putbacks. Nils Cooper looks very good, seems to have polished his game in the offseason. Menlo is giving us a tough game with Kai Brown and Jamaal Unuakahlu scoring 25 of the Oaks 34 points. They might be ahed if not for their 15 turnovers, many unforced.

Cooper looks to be a good find.

Daugherty and Wilson are a combined 2-13 and i swear most of those were shots within 2 feet of the bucket. 4-12 from 3's, 1-8 not counting Connor. We haven't taken advantage of their fouls -> we're missing many of the front end of the 1-1. We really have to be tougher on the boards.

Disjointed offensive play by the Ags...definitely not in sync with each other. Defense forced a lot of TO's but also broke down too often and the rebounding leaves a lot to be desired. I guess this is to be expected with so many new players. The former Ag, JaMaal Unuakhalu, had an impressive half for the Oaks

Is the general manager position new for UC Davis?
  • DrMike
    977
    yes.

Ragged start to half. No continuity with fouls. Offense is still ragged. Seem too rushed near the hoop

I hope Bob Williams does the color for many of the games. Coach Abatemarco knows his stuff but he doesn't have the on air charisma as Coach Williams and his commentary is more incisive.

The inability to make shots in the paint is keeping this close

    My thoughts as well.

I also do like Bob Williams as a color commentary. The advantage for Coach Abatemarco is that he knows the new players well, so he can give better insight on their potential.

It is obviously the first game of the season but seems like a bit of the same issues as last year.

I'm hoping that Wilson will emerge as the high quality point guard we've gotten used to having. We sure could use T Y Johnson now. He must be turning over in his grave at all the dead bunnies.

Agree. We've haven't been great finishers in recent years. Menlo is pretty athletic for a lower level team, and they seem to be forcing our guys to rush in the paint.

Les won't like the 60% FT!

Lots of new pieces that look like they can really help. Our offense and defense isn't something that transfers can just slip into and feel comfortable. It will take some time.

Apparently Brayden Fagbemi is injured. Perhaps he may be our starting point guard once he's healthy?

Agreed! I am currently dealing with 3 essays due in the next 5 days so I'm going to try and finish one of them and get out there. Most people I think should be past midterms mostly, so the turnout hopefully is good!
