Long-standing traditions seem to fall by the wayside to “new traditions” at which I chuckle at the oxymoronish nature. Cheerleaders used to stand on milk cans and wear denim outfits embracing the “Aggie” tradition but of course that went out of vogue.

My guess is that nobody asked the motor pool or the student mechanical body to go look at it. I knew at least 3 dozen individuals working on FutureCar etc. who'd have that tractor humming in a month.

My question is: who is the person who needs to ask the motor pool? Seems like there just no will to do this. Most people would say I am pretty liberal, but I am conservative when it comes to the love of cultural history and traditions. They are the glue that keeps us together. Anybody know who this person might be?

it really is an ag mech or student club similar to the tractor pull clubs at many US ag schools. My guess is that those sorts of clubs are not at Davis - more of a Midwest and southern thing. Unless there is some sort of existing club with a faculty advisor, it would be difficult to get going.

There was an active Ag mechanics club that looked after the thing but since disbanded. They had some early gas tractors too. The steam engine wasn’t really a tractor. It was like a portable steam engine to power all sorts of mechanical functions.
I don’t know if actually having something hot, with fire and steam is acceptable in North America any longer. Too risky.
If they could locate the tractor they might simulate the engine whistle with compressed air or something.
