FCS Playoffs Round 2: #9 Rhode Island (11-2) @ #8 UC Davis (8-3)

    After a 1st round bye, the Aggies get to take on the Rams of the University of Rhode Island. They come into the 2nd round after beating Central Connecticut State 27-19 in a game that was probably closer than Rams fans would have hoped. Now they have to travel across the country for a late kickoff on ESPN2.

    The Rams are lead by QB Devin Farrell who has completed 245/370 passing attempts (66.22%) on the season for 3452 yards with 22 TDs to only 8 INTs. He also does have some mobility and has 77 rushing attempts and gained 290 yards with 3 rushing TDs. The Rams have 4 guys with 30+ receptions on the season, but his top 2 targets have been WR Marquis Buchanan who has 73 receptions for 1224 yards with 6 TDs and WR Greg Gaines III who has 61 receptions for 935 yards with 4 TDs. The Rams average 288.54 passing yards per game.

    In terms of their run game, the Rams feature 1 main guy who is RB Antwain Littleton Jr who has 225 rushing attempts for 1145 yards (5 yards per rush) with 12 rushing TDs. RB Brendon Barrow has gotten significantly less burn with 53 rushing attempts for 370 yards (7 yards per rush) with 5 rushing TDs, so he's made the most of his limited attempts. The Rams average 138.8 rushing yards per game.

    Defensively, the Rams definitely have a couple of standout players. LB Moses Meus collected 102 total tackles on the season with 5 sacks, 1 INT, and 2 FF. LB Rohan Davy collected 98 total tackles with 6 sacks and 12 TFLs. LB AJ Pena collected 67 total tackles with 10 sacks, 19 TFLs, and 1 FF. The Rams defense is allowing 133.1 rushing yards per game and 184.69 passing yards per game.

    All in all, I think this is a pretty winnable game for the Aggies. The Rams were statistical giants against a really weak schedule. Their LBs are monsters, but what stands out to me is that over the course of the season they allowed less than 200 yards per game, but then let a pretty poor Central Connecticut State drop over 300 on them. I haven't watched other games from Rhode Island, but if their defense plays like they did this weekend then our offense should eat.

    This will be far from a cakewalk, but I will say that Rhody's play was pretty uninspiring against Central Connecticut and that was at home for them... Now they have to travel across the country against a rested team.

    RI pass. Defense is pretty questionable. Our receivers are fast and have good hands and an accurate QB should eat RI up unless they have a great pass rush. No pass rush. I would say we may not need our punter.

    yes. ESPN 2 is available on cable tv, online, multiple streaming services/youtubeTV, and the espn app rather than just the espn app/online for espn+. Espn 2 will automatically add viewers from all the bars/restaurants/etc who have ESPN and ESPN 2 automatically on.

    I wonder why ESPN chose to cover this game. Not complaining- we’ll take it! but there’s NDSU, the Montanas, Tarleton all ranked higher w home games and generally strong attendance. I’m guessing Sac St game attendance didn’t hurt and maybe it had to do with possible times

    West Coast slot and doesn't really help that the URI watchers will see it starting 10 pm ET.

    Maybe Rocko made a deal...and you know what, good, let's go. All that NIL $$$ flowing we can't get an ESPN exec to point the finger in.Davis' direction?...then we ain't worth a pinch of salt. Let's populate the game and get it up in every household and watch bar we can next Saturday night.

    That weekend is generally FBS conference championship weekend. There doesn't appear to be any west coast football games that weekend that I see other than a small chance that the Mountain West Conference game is hosted by UNLV or San Diego State.

    There's no other FCS game in the west coast. Therefore, it looks like a shoo-in for UC Davis to be on ESPN2. I hope we get more opportunities like this in the future due to lack of competition for that time slot.

    The game matches number eight seed and number 9 seed so may be the most competitive game. One side feels gypped that the other got what they think they earned
    Teams from opposite sides of the country provides more regional interest than games like Stephen F Austin vs Abilene Christian.

    Looking at Rhode Islands schedule, I see that they only beat one team (New Hampshire, 8-5) that had an overall winning record. In conference they beat three teams that has a combined record of 2-22 in league play. Not very impressive.
