I remember my sophmore year they were looking at changing the name. I just think times have changed. Do I think it would be a net positive? yeah, but do I think it will happen? Prob not. I mean go look at Downtown Davis....its a shell of what it used to be...it is very hard to change peoples minds.

The double-font logo first appeared around 1993. I don’t know the specific history but prior to that time the university seal or the Block CA were used across campus. It timed with 3 things - several other UC campuses were also developing wordmarks, an overall trend among universities to separate academic and athletic wordmarks/logos, and word processing becoming commonplace over typewriters for communication. The font has actually been updated slightly a couple times since.

The C-Horse logo was designed in 1999 by a committee of about 30 working with a big shot New York branding company. In 1998, Men’s Basketball won the D2 national championship and to the chagrin of many a “Cal-Davis” banner was hoisted by the NCAA. It was determined that the brand was too inconsistent given that even the NCAA got it wrong. Each team was kind of doing its own thing with some sort of CA or script Davis and a mishmash of attempts at mascots and logos, mostly cows and water towers. Gunrock hadn’t been a thing since the 1920s but was resurrected into a costumable mascot as part of the unified brand. There was tension though, as rowing and the Band-uh were committed to the Block CA and baseball I believe to the Lemon CA.

I don’t know the history of all the logos, but I do know the band wore mostly hand-me-down uniforms from Cal through the 1970s so the “A” was added by hand to the Cal “C”. Wouldn’t surprise me if athletics was also getting some secondhand equipment in the era.

I haven't seen anyone but the former Band-uh! use the monogram CA*--anyone dug through the old athletics/campus archives to check that?

*It's very easy to make on the field with a fairly small band. ;)

If we're voting, I prefer the script Davis and "lemon" logo on helmets, and the Block CA on water towers and other campus paraphernalia.

I feel we have finally gotten the helmets/uniforms correct after a lot years that weren't so great.
The Russell Athletic years were not great '06-'09. The early Adidas years 2010-2016 were an overall improvement.

Starting in 2017 we've gotten things straightened out. CA and script Davis on helmets all the way for me.
I don't see anyone straying from the athletics font, which seems to be unique to Davis, and most people seems to like.

Gold Davis script helmet, white jerseys, gold pants on the road for me. The team looks lean and fast in that look.

What should change is the University logo font UCDAVIS.

I brought up putting "Aggie Pride" somewhere on the field a few years back, like "Bear Down" at U of A. I always thought that was cool.

I think our field is the best looking in the conference right now.

Welcome young blood. This is a very entertaining off-season topic. Thoughts from a self-proclaimed uniform aficionado:
    1. Don't F with the golds. Grey facemasks, classic font, Notre Dame-esque sparkling helmets. Ooozes Aggie pride. Same with the jersey/pant combo for the "traditional" look (white numbers, gold pants). No names on the back.
    2. I really like the white helmet with the gold facemasks. I am not a fan of white facemasks except on white helmets (University of Texas, Miami Hurricanes and Dolphins) so I vote thumbs down on putting them on the gold or blue helmets. Same with gold numerals, can't stand that on white jerseys especially and I would bet the coaching staff would agree with me from a film watching perspective.
    3. The Cincinnati/Chicago "C" with the small A is an official school logo so that won't change. However, maybe as an alternate jersey you have an annual throwback uniform look to commemorate a team from the past. Wear them at homecoming or something. We have the helmets to do it, it's simply a matter of replacing stickers probably. The old Champion Aggies logos (big block C-A) could be cool to build off of.
    4. I'm a traditionalist, so I embrace "Aggies". Texas A&M is the only other notable Aggie in college football. No one thinks Utah State, New Mexico State, or anyone other than A&M. In fact, I have found in my experience typically say, "oh, that's cool" when mentioning Aggies.
    5. Incorporating some gold onto the navy jerseys is a good call. A couple of those mocks look pretty good with that.
    6. Grey uniforms have mostly died in college football fashion, have they not? Aside from Army/Navy/Air Force, has anyone worn those lately? Would be a nice tribute to the 2018 team in 2028...
    7. What's the fate of Tahoe Blue? One timer? We can have some fun with some ag-related uniforms, but I like the thought of recognizing an academic program with one of the alternates. Some sort of Gunrock jersey commemorating the Cavalry Remount Service and military horse breeding program that gave us the mascot. Could design based on 1920s/1930s cavalry uniforms or something. Lots of options but I think a single game, way outside the box concept coupled with a potential throwback and our myriad of other combos is pretty cool.

Great thread topic, keep it rolling!

I like the idea of using Davis script on the football field.

I’m a fan of just using “Davis” whenever possible, especially in the context of sports. Unfortunately many people (not us on the board obviously) lump all the UCs together once you get past Cal and UCLA.

De-emphasizing the UC might help distinguish us from the other UCs. It could reduce the amount of times broadcasters refer to us as 'Cal Davis.', which bugs me- ha.

I agree, I think with CAL and UCLA we'll always be UC-whatever, if we can run with "Davis", the more we can separate ourselves.

I am also for just calling the the the Davis Aggies, just as CAL is called the California Golden Bears, not the UC Berkeley Golden Bears. I think UCLA Bruins works because the whole name is an acronym, not an Acronym + Name. I like how CAL put UC Berkeley on the sideline Paint. UC Davis can do the same thing, just put University of California, Davis on the sideline paint.

I think we also need to cover the concrete brick on the interior ring of the stadium with UCD colors so it doesn't look so much like a prison yard. Kind of like how behind each goal post there are blue pads on the brick. Maybe continue that all the way around or decal over it?

Very easy to apply coverings to concrete block construction. Vinyl is easy and less expensive, but you can also attach other forms of signage, pads, etc. Good call. I feel like everyone knows that "Davis" is in the UC system, similar to how we all know that "Cal" is a part of that same system as well.

I'm torn on the midfield logo. That thing might run from 25 yard line to the other 25!

I bet most national CFB fans don't actually know that UCLA and Cal are in the same system.

When UCLA was started as a campus they intentionally preferenced the initials over the full name because they didn’t want to be thought of as a branch of UC Berkeley. To this day they still stress using UCLA for most usages. As you say most people don’t get the connection to the UC system, or care. Mission accomplished.

You are correct. There are plenty of people in Southern California that don't know what the "UC" stands for in UCLA

I remember a guy in high school told me he wanted to go to UC-Arizona. I was like, you do know what “UC” stands for, right?
