For San Diego locals, best Mexican food in Old Towne or vicinity?

wife and I like Casa Reyes inside the state park. Cafe Coyote on Old Town Blvd is a good one.

Due to guys not available, our defense had a less returners than anticipated in the preseason. Some inexperience showed but overall most of those guys did well.

we really like the vibe inside the park better than the street. Mariachi’s on the weekend in the plaza with margarita stands, lots of families hanging out.

I've spent a few lazy, sometimes hungover Sundays there in my past. Absolutely love the vibe there. And I'm a history nerd so always enjoy a stroll through the park.

away from Old Town, we really like Prado inside Balboa Park, especially out on the patio. Love strolling around museums there before/after dinner. That’s our destination Thursday.

Dr. Mike has the local knowledge, he is the unofficial board tour consultant and restaurant recommender for the great San Diego area. All of the spots he's touting are legit. Also, anything that serves burritos and ends in "-berto's" is a safe bet, especially late at night if you're crossing back from TJ.

Slight statistical dive into the Torreros:

-USD was under 40% (38.9%) on 3rd down conversions last season. That seems low to me.
-Their O-Line only allowed 20 sacks on the season. Granted, the non-scholarship Pio conference is not going to be home to any elite pass rushers (D-Line, DB, and OL are the hardest positions to recruit and they'll get paid elsewhere if they have the measurables and can walk and chew gum), but that is an impressive stat.
-While the Torreros averaged 9 yards per Punt Return, their opponents averaged 16+. BOLD PREDICTION: AGGIES WILL HOUSE ONE ON SATURDAY NIGHT
-Next BOLD PREDICTION: USD's Offense won't turn the ball over, and if they do, it will likely be a one-time occurrence. In all of 2025, they threw 3 picks and lost 3 fumbles. That is efficient.
-USD rushed, on average, for 155 yards per game in 2025. I will bet the UNDER on that number vs Davis. I'm intrigued to see the 6'3" WR-turned-Tailback up close.
-Conversely, the Toreros only allowed 107 YPG on the ground Defensively, another impressive stat.

IF I WERE THE TOREROS: On Offense, I would attempt to play keep away from the Aggies. "Grind and wind", practice taking the play clock down, look at the Illinois State and Rhode Island film, see if we couldn't pound Zone runs at the Aggie D, throw boots and play action, get the ball into the flats like PSU did, and sit on it.

IF I WERE THE AGGIES: I would load the box defensively, go after the big Tailback, and make that QB and his WRs play into the strengths of our D, which is coverage and pass rush. Keep them behind the sticks. Offensively, I would press the tempo to a frenzied pace but focus on the running game in doing so. The Ags should have a size and speed advantage, use it with tempo.

Kai Acia logged 5.4 ypc in a backup role, built a bit more stocky than some.

Gonna get San Diego's absolute best shot tomorrow. Better be disciplined and execute at a high level. OL and DL need to get after it early.

Anyone have an idea of Chauncey Sylvester’s status for the game? Weird that Plough raved about him in press conference Monday before PSU game, then not available. Logical to infer he might be injured in practice last week. Puzzling why he wasn’t on depth chart.

No mention of him at the lunch yesterday.

The Toreros absolutely have the Aggies full and undivided attention. There will be no overlooking the opponent. I predict we get a much improved version of who they are tomorrow night. First game for USD, going to be like an Aggie home game, Toreros will be juiced out of their minds to play #7 in the nation, and that's when mistakes happen. Aggies roll!

As frustrated as we get with things like the online roster and poor sound quality for interviews and press conferences in Davis, the USD Athletics/Football website is really an afterthought. Literally nothing to read or promote the team/game. But I did learn that the Aggie game is the Brian Fogarty Classic (apparently an old coach from USD) and Multicultural Night...

Attendance might be pretty light tomorrow. San Diego State plays PSU 10 mins up the road at 6:30.

Not sure SDSU will be a particularly big draw for the community / casual fans regardless, can't see it really affecting turnout except for dual-loyalty folks. Might affect traffic depending on which way you're traveling to and from the game and where your lodging is.

Used to be, SDSU would make its FCS game its massive fireworks night. That time UCD played there it had something like 40k attendance for that reason. Seems they discontinued the practice.

the weather this weekend is the best that I’ve experienced. The margarita guy in fiesta Reyes said this has been their best Friday all summer.

They drew about 5700 last year when they opened at home vs Poly for a 5:00 kickoff. Might be a decent crowd tomorrow.

200 registered for the Aggie tailgate. We ate at fiesta reyes. Excellent. We just don’t get that quality of Mexican food in N Cal, although we have a favorite spot in Watsonville we hit when we’re in Aptos.

The Torero's probably drew a lot of bets when the line had the Ags favored by 24.5. The line has now moved down to 17.5 and ESPN has UCD as a 15.5 favorite.

Looking back, USD opened with poly the last two years drawing around 5700 folks. Stadium capacity is only 6000. I doubt we’ll be close to that but higher than the last couple afternoon visits (around 2000)
