Cleeland made several good throws down the field against Portland State and more than one against USD. And that was another very good long ball under pressure at USD that was dropped by the tight end. Yes Cleeland had a bad second quarter at SMU. Kollock will get some time against Stetson, but saying the one very good long throw at SMU somehow should elevate him over Cleeland at this point is pretty reactionary (not saying you were the one to say this). I trust Plough to make decisions as to QB.

Be careful about sticking to an opinion that isn’t based on all the information. This creates bias.

We have 3 games of Cleeland. We have a pretty good idea of his talent. He is the same QB I saw in spring practice. He hits some and misses others. No real consistency in his throws. He doesn’t have the wheels to be an explosive runner nor the touch to hit guys in stride. He is what you would expect from an FCS QB.

Jackson is a legit 6’4 4* QB from SoCal with an extensive high school record. He only came to Davis because CP left otherwise he would be at a bigger FBS program. If we landed Jackson out of high school he would’ve been the highest ever recruit to sign with Davis. Don’t discount that.

We have only seen a small sample size of Jackson and in that limited time the offense looked much better. The team looked focused. The offense looked like it clicked. And before you say it was against backups, remember these backups are on one of the best teams in college football. Every player on SMU would start for Portland St and San Diego.

Give Jackson a shot. He might be the next great Davis QB. Let their play dictate who the starter is.

I'll still stand by whatever decision Plough makes going into this game, but if there is a singular opportunity to give Kollock some game experience with the 1st stringers it's this game as I think we could probably put Kori the tee dog out at QB and still beat Stetson. We hit conference games after and it's not a good sign for the team if you're still experimenting with who your starting QB is that late into the season.

Never said he was perfect or didn't miss, but I stated the obvious in that the defensive unit he faced compared to his back-ups was significantly different. Open receivers all over the field? I saw us struggling to separate most of the time with Plough dialing up a couple concepts that got guys open. I never played QB, not sure if you did either, but when the game gets sped up like it was Saturday, and things aren't where they're supposed to be, you see why so few guys on the planet get paid to do it for a living, and we're talking about 19 year old kids in their third collegiate start. Receivers have to be open, and the ball has to come out quick. I'm sure that if there were "open receivers all over the field" and he was missing consistently, the coach probably would have made the change, I trust that as fact. Again, no time, no running game.

I have no issue with Kollock or anyone else, and I am not a Cleeland relative or homer. I've just watched enough football in my life to know not to put the blame on that position when an entire roster was overwhelmed. Hell, CP looked overwhelmed against the Huskies if you watched that and no one is saying a word about his back-up. Plough left Cleeland out there that long for a reason, and it wasn't because he couldn't make a throw. It was an investment in the future. There was only one player out there that looked like he belonged on that field with SMU and he played on the other side of the ball.

Is Cleeland - Miles Hastings / Hunter Rodriguez 2.0? It sounds like he has a stronger arm.

Cleeland is bigger, stronger, and more athletic and has a higher ceiling as a thrower than those guys, in my opinion. He just hasn't yet mastered the offense. Which can take a couple of years in our current system. As long as we have a brand new QB each year, the first 4-6 games will look like this, sadly. We need continuity at QB.

There were several others in the decades since but I was front and center for those two in the early Sochor years.

I think that is part of the fun of sports as a fan (while it is often torture for the humans involved). It is good to remember that some all-time great athletes were not can't miss out of the box.

We are blessed with riches at QB in Davis - we have two, probably 3 guys who could start at various schools in the FCS.

Your first year was Jim's senior year, 1976, Moroski was a freshman (great frosh team that year, a lot of fun). Unless you went to a road game you didn't see them lose. Of course the two losses stick in my memory more than the eight wins: at Northridge, Jack Elway's first year as a college head coach; at SLO, a great team that tied Boise at home and beat Fresno St. on the road.

Poly jobbed us that night. Rolf kicked two early long field goals, but it was foggy and the refs waved both of them as wide left. Bunch of other bad flags, shifted momentum. But I'm not bitter fifty years later, not me. (I was a student trainer.) (And I looked this up, bitterness stays strong while the memory fades).

Alright, what do we know about Stetson:

-Cool mascot, the Hatters. Named after the Stetson hat guy, John B. Stetson. I own several and can attest to the high quality of those cowboy hats. Highly recommended.
-Located in Deland, Florida. Mr. Stetson was a founding trustee of the University.
-Members of the Pioneer Football Conference, meaning they meet a high percentage of a prospect's financial need but don't offer "football scholarships". Similar to Ivies in that regard, but the Ivy endowments and % of need met is much, much higher.

Enough trivia. About the team:

-Better skill personnel than the University of San Diego, but several Top 10 Division 3 programs have better skill personnel than USD.
-Speaking of the NAIA on a different thread, the HC of Stetson took this job last season after a turnaround at Bethel (KS), an NAIA program.
-Coordinators are mostly NAIA/Small College guys but nice resumes. DC has an outstanding faux hawk if interested.
-RUN THE DAMN BALL! They have allowed an average of 227 ypg on the ground, including 140 yards rushing gained by their NAIA opponent in a blowout.
-They don't score much, except vs. the NAIA team that was ranked #52 at that level in pre-season.
-GET AFTER THE QB! The Hatter QBs are being sacked 4x per game. Coupled with the fact that they only rush for around 140 ypg tells me one thing; their O-Line sucks. Really focus on their Guard play, those two are suspect, especially the Left Guard, he can't move.
-Stetson coverage units on Special Teams are suspect at best... 25 yards per kickoff return and nearly 22 yards per punt return!
("Suspect" is my nice way of saying not good)
-The back-up QB is their leading rusher, but he has 8 pass attempts while the other guy has 81. Combined, they have over 40 rushing attempts (which includes Sacks) so they are either a designed QB run team, or they are running for their lives.
-#5 has twice as many receptions as anyone else, and #8 averages over 20 yards per catch. He is also the leading non-QB ball carrier so probably a good football player.
-Defensively, a Freshman DB is the leading tackler, and a LB named Shug (outstanding name!) is #2. If I had any more kids, Shug would be in name-consideration for sure. They run a 3-4 which typically=you can't recruit Defensive Linemen and you don't have any in the program. Hence the rushing totals against.
-#s 92 and 14 lead the team in Sacks, with one each. The team has two total sacks. Thanks, 3-4 scheme.

Overall, I'll take the Aggies in a route. I was not impressed with USD, the champion of this conference, and I won't leave impressed with Stetson and their NAIA pedigree. Plough won't say this, but the Aggie egos were bruised and it is time to flex:
