Not discounting your anecdotes on campus but that’s certainly not reflective of the entire university nor is it unusual for institutions with strong academics to have student support even during finals. This all gets back to Plough’s gripe and being expected to do more with less. It should be a priority to have a show with a sponsor rather than a weekly q&a with Dunning and no microphone. It should be a priority to have someone proof the SID releases and correct the obvious mistakes. It should be a priority to have this game plastered across town the last two weeks, including the student ticket options. These are just basic things that are not being done effectively and the people that should be managing these things are running around touting facilities plans that have zero ROI.

I agree with you there. I think advertising for sports games on campus and around town has been really bad (it seems to be improving this season but hasn't seemed as successful this week so far..). The giveaways seem to help too. I think the production of things like press conferences, the problems with tickets, lack of knowledge about the game unless you are on social media constantly (like you could walk through campus and not know football is being played due to lack of football advertising beyond tv's in the coho saying a game is happening) or flyers/posters advertising the SEASON or team itself in any coffee shops, restaurants or stores in town is just a fail year round. Montana and MSU do this and it seems to get the word out around the area (we could start with Davis and try to branch to leverage north valley/north bay support with this). Last years PR stuff around the playoffs was embarrassing and this year is seeming slightly better so far, but I agree if you are going to play with the big boys and try to get on espn and do all the facility stuff these improvements cannot happen without more public interaction. I was home last weekend in the bay and say like 5 sjsu football and cal football ads on streaming platforms and tv.

I think all these facility/conference things are important in tandem, I just dont get why it seems like the energy into these basics has not been as seemingly important to match that of the new exciting building/higher competition stuff.

Davis has plenty of students that would want to help with these sort of things... heck The Aggie Newspaper is in every coffee shop around town and I hear about the concerts on campus (like sunset fest and lawntopia) NONSTOP for weeks before they happen. I dont think its that Davis doesnt have resources or support, it just seems like the "sleeping giant" is still partly under anesthesia.

"I think the 7 pm start will hurt attendance." What about the students? Is finals week coming up. When I was there, rabid dogs wouldn't have kept me away, or even an organic chem final.

Is much done to get the word out in CoHo, Memorial Umion, Quad, main lecture halls?

lol the Rhody fan on AGS with a score prediction of Rhode Island 42 UC Davis 14... Again I'm not saying that it's 100% chance we win or anything like that and wild things can happen, but I have a tough time seeing that result. That they would put a bigger beat down on us at home than Montana State did on the road is kind of funny.

agreed, it shouldn’t be hard to have a functional YouTube press conference. Disappointing to hear stadium audio is still an issue. It’s been pushing 20 years and still not solved?

It's been a few years since I witnessed an issue, but I don't see a lot of games.

Lamson wasn’t particularly impressive when we played him, completed very few, if any, impressive passes and any QB who’s half an athlete can take advantage of the Montana state run game to find lanes to run

Hello Aggies! URI fan looking forward to playing you guys. No question this will be a difficult game for the Rams. Despite our record, we have seen erratic play and lots of miscues especially early in season and that explains the URI loss to Brown. We started to clean that up later in season and ended with some strong performances, the CCSU game not included. Our QB is a real dude and game's outcome will be largely of his making.

Yes, I agree the CAA is not as strong as the Big Sky. and this fact makes us underdogs on Saturday. The CAA has deteriorated with the loss of Delaware, James Madison and Old Dominion to FBS and the impending departure of Richmond, William & Mary and Villanova to the Patriot League. We are now left with a few old rivals Maine and UNH and find ourselves with some southern schools which we have little in common To answer this board's question on who our Sac St. is - we have really none. It used to be Brown when the Ivy League was mighty, but otherwise UConn was our hated rival in all sports which ended when the Big East was created and when they later moved their football program up to the FBS level.

Some other info, URI is a land grant college and has agricultural beginnings. Our hated rivals in basketball at Providence College sometimes refer to URI as the Farm. Our colors are Keaney Blue, white and Navy blue. The light blue was developed by our legendary BB coach Frank Keaney who was also a chemistry professor. Keaney developed the color and the school adopted Rams as our mascot a few years before UNC who despite their Tarheels nick name use a Ram as mascot. They also stole our pep song. Oh, and we are a top surfing school based on east coast standards.

haha and yes what agalum said, several of us tried to sign up on your forum and none of us were successful. Either we're all dumb or there is an issue with the sign up process.

I agree, your QB is a DUDE. He MIGHT be the best QB we have seen (per my post yesterday), but the Big Sky produces a lot of capable pass offenses, and I know our coaching staff will respect the threat that he poses. I don't like to compare because surrounding talent, offensive systems, opposing defenses, etc. are so different.

Welcome to the board. I wish I could see the looks on your player's faces when they look out the plane window and realize that Sac/Davis looks more like Texas than Santa Barbara and San Diego

Welcome. We're an ag school, too, one of the largest land holdings for colleges, and if you like California wines, we excel there as well. For any visiting RI fans, if you have time, visit the central campus (foot or bike only) area - the Quad. The Coffee House (CoHo) offers affordable food. And walk downtown, a classic college town.

I love those fun facts especially about your colors. Now I understand your forum's basketball name better.

Go to Farmers Market on Saturday at Davis central Park. Ita a large market with a good selection.

I have been to the Davis campus. I have a friend who lived for many years in Roseville who got a Master's degree at UC Davis. I got acquainted and enjoyed the area on visits with him, tasted lots of wine. bought walnuts by the bushel, visited the State Capitol in Sacramento, and even attended a River Cats game. I was in awe of that team which Forbes once listed as the most valuable minor league franchise n the country. But the ticket prices were high and they charged for parking which is not true for what once was our local triple A team.

Also, Sacramento was the site of the 2017 NCAA MBB first round when we beat Creighton and then lost a heartbreaker to Oregon. Many URI fans made the trek to CA then, but I doubt many will be making the trip this Saturday's game. We are still very much a basketball school. You see that in the facilities difference.

FWIW, the Segundo Dining Commons is open to the public, near the stadium and all you can eat for $15 (adult). The quality is supposedly very good with many food options.

Top surfing school, tell us more! That is an awesome fact. I knew there were some breaks up and down the East Coast, I've surfed Florida, but never even considered your area out of ignorance, the movie Jaws, and your water temps. There's an 18 degree +/- water temp difference between your place and mine, and I vowed to never buy a wetsuit that thick, booties, or a cap. I'm not that serious about the sport.

Aside from liking your QB, that #8 on defense is a bad hombre. He's a guy who will get some NFL looks I would guess.

#8 is AJ Pena. New Jersey native, left after last season to Memphis which was understandable given the $$ being thrown around FBS. After spring semester he decided to leave Memphis and come back to Rhody over the summer. He is our all time sack leader and IMO the best defensive player we have ever had in my 35+ years of following. Great kid too. He is the heart and soul of our defense. I would guess he sees a lot of double teams by you.

Thanks for the back story, I was really impressed with his abilities, his energy, and perceived leadership. He is the heart and soul and they do a nice job moving him around. Aside from Corners, Defensive Linemen are probably the hardest to find at this level because if they can walk and chew gum, they'll get paid more and/or poached. Pretty cool that he loves URI and came back, and that your staff thought so highly of him that they let him back.

Your head coach looks like he could be driving a lobster boat the other 7 months a year. I enjoyed seeing him celebrate with the kids and for their success, which you don't see a lot of times out of coaches our age. His RHODY FOOTBALL sweatshirt was nice too, like his style.

Sounds like you know the ropes around NorCal, I don't have any recommendations for things to do or places to see

As a non-season ticket holder/team aggie, the tickets for sections 123 and 121 are sold first. Section 122 (center) are not released until after season ticket holders have a chance to purchase. For me, it is a little frustrating that there are better seats available now than there were when I purchased. My seats are pretty good in 121, but there is a definite "penalty" for being early.

I would call the ticket office. I’ve had a few issues through the years and they always make it right. My guess is they would exchange your tickets for better seats.

More info in RI surfing. The Atlantic being smaller than the Pacific has an effect on break size and consistency. A wet suit is a definite requirement. Water temperature gets to about 72 degrees in summer, but the surf is flatter and you can go days with little activity. It’s probably best time for beginners. The scene picks up dramatically late summer/Fall especially if there is a hurricane in the Atlantic and then you can get 3-4 days of magnificent waves. The uniqueness is breaks here can come from two directions and the diversity is awesome. The best places to surf near URI are Narrgansett, Point Judith and Matunuck all about a 15-20 minute drive from campus. Further from campus in the direction of Newport are Goosewing Beach, Second Beach/Sachuest Point where the uniqueness lies in its south-west orienatation and Ruggles the only area in RI that you can get a bona fide XXL wave. While surfing on east coast plays second fiddle to California, the rugged coast of RI provides an interesting back drop of light houses, church steeples, domes, and Gothic towers you won’t find anywhere else.

Sorry for the diversion. Back to football.
  • Pacifico2
    82
Haha! No apology needed, I asked for it. Sounds very unique, and that is some nice summertime water temperature. This is a great time in Southern California on some of the south-facing breaks up near Ventura and Santa Barbara, but that's a long way from Sac/Davis.

Back to football. Your RB is a Stanford bounceback? Is he an East Coast kid? My impression of your Offensive Line was that, aside from the Left Tackle, they seemed on the shorter side. They were well coached, especially in pass pro and picking-up stunts and pressures, but looked undersized. They're obviously effective with the URI offensive numbers.

I assume you mean Brendon Barrow. He hails from Ontario Canada and transferred as grad student from Stanford. He is 5'8", 190 lbs. Yes, our offensive line is not big and drives up the gut are often thwarted. This is big weakness when playing stronger teams. We saw that in the Western Michigan game.
