Scholarships are one year contracts, renewed annually. Someone figured that out a few years ago and started cutting guys. Then the portal came along and not only allowed an opportunity for free agency, but also a dumping ground for the players cut.

A significant portion of scholarship players that wind up in the portal did not get there voluntarily.

    Exactly right.

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but let CV go, I hope he gets what he thinks he deserves. If the NFL has taught me/us anything, it is that Running Backs are a dime a dozen. If he's an elite, NFL prospect type, he'll get the money then go tear it up wherever. Good for him. What I'm saying is that: 1.) we can win without him, and that 2.) it is not hard to replace top running backs.

I'm not sure how a player gets tabbed as NFL prospect after half a season against FCS competition. I wish CV well, think he makes our backfield deadly.

FTR, our campus decides two days before the playoff game to extend move out time in the dorms eight hours. Huh? Do they really want students driving home late at night? Why couldn't they just extend it 24 hours, keep the DC closed so there is minimal impact on staffing.

My NFL comment was with regard to a post someone made back up the line. I agree, too early to tell with way too small a sample size.

Also agree with your statement on the timing. The dorm decision was made more with our players in mind than the student fans.

The question isn't whether Carter Vargas is irreplaceable, it's whether he can be immediately replaced.
I get that Ohio State, or Alabama can replace running backs, but at Davis we have to wait for a recruit to be overlooked as too small, or played a different position, lack of competition or was a late bloomer. Guys like Vargas don't come along every year.
There is a certain number of lost transfers Davis can compensate for, but too many will impact the record. See Idaho's experience this year.

We have a good run, Joshua Kelly (NFL) Lan Larison (NFL), Ulonzo Gilliam.

Not shocked, you can only play one. Pinnick and Cleeland ahead with no sign of that changing next year, much less the next four years, plus Eason and a '26 QB signed. Slim chance of being anything but #3 at best next year given how it shakes out right now. I think one of our other QBs already "entered the portal". Wishing both those guys nothing but the best-

If anything I think that this is a positive sign that Pinnick is sticking around for at least awhile longer. If it was looking like it was open competition again this next season he'd probably be sticking around.

Mercer's freshman of the year QB is hitting the portal

If CP leaves is it Cleeland and Eason up next?

I would assume so, but at least in my eyes this is an indicator that he's staying
  • Pacifico2

Probably. Harper and Cleeland are the two QBs dressed and signaling at the games I've made. I think Wrighster traveled when Pinnick was sick. Rasor has been out with an injury. That leaves the two other freshmen, Eason and Guess.

CA Forever, I agree. All indications would lead us to believe he's in for 2026

I hope so, but I think he leaves. There is way too many big programs looking for QB's...Oregon, FSU, Miami, Georgia, etc. He is exactly the type of young Frosh QB the big schools are after.

Just because Rasor and Wrightster will enter the portal, it doesn't mean they will leave. Like previously mentioned here...I'd be shocked if either of the guys get a $ offer anywhere (and if they do, that'd be awesome). Not a slight on them at all, they just haven't played and there is 0 market demand for them.

I'm not so sure we can read too much into Wrighster entering the portal in regards to Pinnick coming back. Wrighster may see himself still battling with Eason and Cleeland and, potentially, still be #3 if Pinnick transfers out.

We won't know until we know but, what we do know, is that the big boys will be offering our best players some big NIL money and the promise of huge crowds and fame even though only 1.6-2% of all college football players ever go on to play in the NFL and the vast majority of those players are from big time FBS teams. So 98% would be much better off with a highly regarded UC Davis degree.

Is it strange that today after digesting the game and watching Coach P's press conference, I'm actually in greater spirits for next year? I'm really upbeat about the direction of the program. Thank you Aggies for a heck of a season.

I was disappointed for the players and coaches after last night, but very optimistic about our future. I just wish we had a couple more healthy guys on defense last night. I think we can see that we’re on par with the upper tier of FCS and on the doorstep of elite programs.

There were a couple D1 coaches from SoCal who were sitting in front of me during the game. They drove up to game after doing recruiting in the area. They also said this was the first time they had ever been to Davis. They were expecting Davis to be more like SACST or CalPoly, but they were shocked at how big and nice our campus was. I really think we are really turning a corner with perception. If we can keep up the momentum I think a championship is in our future. I really do.

the whole 'Athletic area' of Davis has so much potential. The football stadium is a nice facility that stands out. The proposed upgrades to the basketball arena will make that a really special spot. Add, the updates to baseball/soccer and softball, and its really neat to have an on-campus sports area. If we can get a Grad replacement in the updated shopping area that would be a cool spot for Aggie fans.

We just have to find more Aggie fans from the region!

If I were driving in from the east to the west where the stadium is, what are they building on the northern portion? It looked like it had a large glass facade.

"Tarleton State running back Tre Page III entered the transfer portal at halftime of his team’s upset loss to Villanova in the quarterfinal round of the FCS Playoffs. The timing of his announcement was bizarre."
